Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Vanguard Spoils Season Opener in 1-0 Win Over CSUDH

CARSON -- Visiting Vanguard used a defensive lapse deep in the Toro zone, collecting a rebound at point blank range in the 72nd minute and finishing the sitter for the game's only score to spoil the 2009 season home opener for Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first game for both squads.

The Lions were on the offensive from the start, outshooting the hosts 9-4 in the first 45 minutes of play.  The score remained nil until the 72:45 mark when Gabriela Valles beat a Toro defender 1v1 and blasted a shot off CSUDH keeper #Alyssa Congdon# from 5 yards out.

True to her two-time All-CCAA form, Condgon denied the shot, but the ricochet went directly to the feet of Amanda Couch three yards from Condon's reach, where Couch buried the sitter for what would prove to be the lone score.

Condon repelled eight shots on the afternoon, while her counterpart, Jillian Foss, saved three blasts.  Sophomore sensation #Jessica Murphy# (pictured) tallied five shots including two on goal, but the Toros found themselves on the defensive most of the night, failing to legitimately threaten the Lion defense.

Overall, VU outshot CSUDH 16-9, while tying in corners with two apiece.

The Toros travel to Phoenix to battle Grand Canyon on Saturday at 6:00 pm, before returning home to host Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday, September 1, with first kick set for 4:30 pm in Toro Stadium, at the Home Depot Center's Track and Field Facility.
