Toros Secure Berth in CCAA Baseball Championships With 11-10 & 4-2 Wins at Cal State Stanislaus

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Turlock, CA -- A pair of 11-10 and 4-2 wins not only secured the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team a berth in the CCAA Baseball Championships next week but puts them on the fast-track to move up to the No. 3 seed in the tournament. Paul-Michael Klingsberg ended a wire-to-wire game one picking up his sixth save of the season, while Danny Torres fanned two batters in three innings of duty to record the win in game two.

The pair of wins improves the Toros to 22-12 in the CCAA, surpassing the previous mark of 20 wins in the CCAA regular season to make the 2009 squad the winningest in the CCAA all-time for the Toros.

In game one, Andrew Baslow belted his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot in the seventh, after belting a deep right-field triple in the third that knotted him two RBIs, to give him three on the day.

Game one starter Phillip Van Doren picked up his fifth win this season to break a .500 record and improve him to 5-4. On the win he fanned four of his batters while giving up only three earned runs. Klingsberg fanned only one batter, the last Warrior at the plate, as he picked up the win.

Though not on record in game two, starter Kody Kurowski saw eight complete innings of action, sending six of his batters packing before handing duties over to reliever Torres who fanned his final batter looking, to knot the win, his third of the season.

It was a Derrek Duarte two-RBI double in the 11th frame of the nightcap, that although not a walk-off, dealt the same blow to give CSUDH two late-night runs for a final score of 4-2.

Now a scant two hits shy of the CSUDH single-season record, Carlos Leyva blasted a double in game two to bring his hit total to 87 on the season.

However the true standout on the day from the plate was Jon Alia who went 6-of-10, with a double and five singles. The six hits now puts Alia only one hit behind Leyva, placing both in a battle of who will break the single-season hit record first at CSUDH. The double also gives Alia 22 on the season, three behind the record.

Adding to CSUDH's accolades and standouts this year, the Toros have now become the first team in the 2009 season to take more than one game against the Warriors on their home field dropping CSUS's home record to 23-6.

Now with a 33-18 overall record (22-12 CCAA), the Toros will close out the series with CSUS for a twinbill slated for tomorrow at 12 noon.

Also on the horizon is the CCAA Baseball Championships in Palm Springs, Calif., next weekend. A series sweep of the Warriors will give the Toros the third seed going into the tournament while a sole loss tomorrow secures them the number four seed.
