Toros Send Baseball Seniors Out in Style in 18-5 Win Over Cal State Monterey Bay

The 2009 CSUDH baseball seniors
Box Score
Carson, CA -- After giving up their lead to the Otters in the fifth, the first time they have done so in the four-game series, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team started a late-game push that all six seniors will remember for years to come as the Toros would eventually hold the Otters at bay in a powerhouse 18-5 victory. Though not recording the victory, senior Matt Hopps fanned six batters in only four innings of duty to lead CSUDH from the hill.

Also a senior, Jon Alia added even more runs batted in to his single-season RBI record to bring the total to 72, well beyond the previous mark of 61. Alia notched five RBI in the game, including a deep, third-inning, left-field bomb that brought in two for the Toros. With the home run, Alia now stand at 16 on the season, three short of tying the Toros' single-season record.

In his four at-bats, senior Candelario Flores used his eagle eyes to take first base three times on walks while connecting for a single to go 1-of-4 with an RBI. Flores also scored four runs on the day.

After relief pitcher Michael Cruz secured the win in his two innings of duty after fanning one, head coach Murphy Su'a used the 15-5 run advantage to see two more seniors on the mound in Pascual Olmos and Andrew Macedo, both seeing one inning of duty. Macedo fanned one of his batters while not allowing a hit.

Though giving up their 3-0 lead in the fourth and fifth frames after CSUMB's Andrew Marquardt grounded into a double play that sent home Brent Sargenti, the Toros rallied in the sixth by sending 13 batters to the plate en route to eight runs on only four hits and an Otter error.

The late-game senior sendoff was started by Andrew Baslow, who hit one of his two doubles on the day, this one bringing Flores safely home.

Alia followed the next at-bat with a double of his own to get the excitement going as the Toros eventually drew the day to a close with an 18-5 advantage.

Leading the Toros from the mound to a 8-0 victory in the first game of the series, senior Phillip Van Doren was left out of the action until called to plate duties in the Toros' eighth inning. Van Doren sent a 2-2 pitch deep into center for a fly out in the only at-bat of his career.

Overall CSUDH connected on 19 hits in 44 at-bats with their five pitchers limiting the Otters to eight hits. CSUDH was flawless in the field compared to three miscues by CSUMB.

Now with a 31-18 overall record (20-12 CCAA), the Toros will take to the road for their final four-game series of the 2009 regular season as they take on the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus. The first game is slated for Friday, May 1st, with first pitch at 3:00pm.

With three quarters of the field set for the CCAA Championships, the Toros have all but secured the fourth seed in the tournament. A sole win in the Stanislaus series, a team they are 35-26 against overall, secures them the final slot. On the flip side, if the Otters take a sole game against the Chico State Wildcats this coming week the Toros will also be packing their bags for Palm Springs, the site of the upcoming league tournament.
