Toros Survive Otters' Stamina in Nightcap to Sweep Twinbill, 11-2 & 7-5

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Game 1  |  Game 2

Carson, CA -- Behind timely home runs and devastating effectiveness from its bullpen, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team kept the Otters in the bay as they pulled out a pair of 11-2 and 7-5 decisions to remain undefeated against Cal State Monterey Bay in the four-game series. Starting pitchers Kody Kurowski and David Fair each recorded the wins while fanning six and five batters, respectively.

The pair of wins kept many streaks alive at the Toros home field in Carson, as they have now won four-straight doubleheaders at home to improve their home record to an outstanding 23-4. Jon Alia added to his RBI record following two singles to bring his single-season record total to 67.

The day also gave way to a pair of home runs off the bats of John Skala and Paul-Michael Klingsberg, with Skala's giving the Toros three runs in the nightcap, enough to edge out the Otters in the decision.

The games today were played in stark contrast to yesterday's series opener as CSUMB belted eight doubles, including two from Andrew Marquardt, while CSUDH would blast five of their own.

Game one was decided in favor of the Toros early as Kurowski made quick work of the Otters in his seven innings of duty, fanning six of hit batters. With the infield duo of Carlos Leyva and Luis Perez using their base-running saavy to take home in the third following a wild pitch, one more run in the fourth gave CSUDH a 3-0 advantage, all that was needed in the eventual 11-2 win.

Facing an 0-2 count, Skala's blast in the seventh inning gave the Toros extra insurance, with the reward being his first bomb of the 2009 season.

Quickly becoming a regular in the rotation, Fair was worthy of his game two start as he fanned five of his batters in 5.2 innings of duty while giving up no earned runs.

As if his 3-RBI home run was not enough, head coach Murphy Su'a then called on the prowess of Klingsberg in the final frame of game two, sending him to the mound to shutdown a would-be Otters revival. With two runners on, Klingsberg sent his final batter packing as the batter watched a strike float across the plate, giving Klingsberg his fifth save of the season in the process.

Overall, the Toros connected on 27 hits while their five pitchers fanned 14 of CSUMB's batters and allowed them only 16 hits.

Despite committing six errors, the Toros completed numerous pickoff attempts, two alone from Leyva, to stop the Otters before any damage could be done.

Now with a 30-18 overall record (19-12 CCAA), the Toros will close out the series tomorrow after saying good-bye to six seniors in their final home game of the 2009 season.
First pitch is slated for 12 noon with live statistics of the games available here and live audio here.
