Toros Make Quick Work of Otters in 8-0 Game One Win

Box Score
Carson, CA -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills pitching rotation made quick work of the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay, effectively shutting them down while allowing only eight hits in the 8-0 win. Starter Phillip Van Doren picked up his fourth win of the season while fanning two of his batters and garnering a shutout victory.

With only nine hits in the game as a team, Derrek Duarte would be the sole Toro to connect on more than one pitch, going 2-of-3 to bring home two RBI and score a run of his own.

Overall both teams connected on a total of 17 hits, eight of those from the visitors, with each and every hit a single as both teams stranded a total of eight runners on base to further secure the game's 'small-ball' feeling.

The Toros got the action going quick in the second frame, as Duarte would be the run to cross the plate after getting plunked and sent to first base. Another run from Paul-Michael Klingsberg, who reached on a hard single through the right would give CSUDH the lead at 2-0, more than enough on the day.

Heavy-hitter Jon Alia ended the scoring for the Toros in the seventh with a single to bring home Carlos Leyva, advancing Alia's RBI total to 65, currently the single-season RBI record in Toros baseball history.

Despite scattering all eight of the Otter hits, starter Van Doren was completely effective from the hill, stopping CSUMB in their tracks in all of their scoring opportunities while making one putout and stopping a stolen base. The relief duo of Michael Cruz and Brandon Beal did just as well on the mound, fanning a combined three batters without a hit.

Prior to today's first pitch, the baseball team honored the CSUDH men's and women's basketball and indoor track and field squads for their achievements during their respective 2008-09 seasons, with IT&F All-American Chanel Parker, Barbara Houston and head coach Damaine Powell all throwing out the honorary first pitch.

Now with a 28-18 overall record (17-12 CCAA), the Toros will continue the four-game series with a twinbill set for tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 12 noon with live statistics of the games available here and live audio of game two only here.
