Toros Lock in Day One With 10-6 Win at Dixie State

Box Score
St. George, UT -- For the first time this season, Phillip Van Doren saw action in the first game of a four-game series and did an effective job of shutting down the competition as the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team grabbed a 10-6 win over the Red Storm of Dixie State College in non-CCAA, NCAA in-region play. Tallying his second win of the season, Van Doren threw 8.0 innings and fanned four batters to improve the Toros to a 20-14 overall record.

The first game of the four-game series seemed to be all about unearned runs as the host Red Storm committed four errors en route to four unearned runs, while the Toros commit three of their own for just one free run.

The No. 30 Toros wasted no time flashing their talent as Carlos Leyva reached base in the first inning, swiped both second and third for the second time this season, and came home on an Andrew Baslow single.

After two more runs in the first, the Toros scored again in the sixth as Jon Alia's momentum-capturing double preceded a Dean Benavidez single that sent two more home for CSUDH, bringing the Toros lead to 6-3.

Though riding a 10-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth, the Toros let two runs slip to Dixie before Danny Torres took the ball and shut down the hosts for a series opening 10-6 win.

The Toros were led by Baslow who went 3-4 while tallying an RBI and grabbing two stolen bases.  Leyva followed with a 2-for-4 performance, swiping three bases to grab the single-game record for the 2009 season.

Van Doren was phenomenal from the mound with four strikeouts while giving up only four hits to the Red Storm.

Overall, the Toros finalized the win from the field despite their three errors as they held Dixie to only six hits while belting out 12 of their own.

Now with a 20-14 overall record, the Toros will once again face off against Dixie State in a twinbill scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 pm Pacific Time.
