Toros Sweep Urban Knights in Three-Game Series with 15-3 and 10-1 Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Game 1  |  Game 2

Carson, CA – The Toros ended action today over the Urban Knights of Academy of Art, going a perfect 3-0 in the three game series, due in part to the hitting of Jon Alia, who hit three bombs in the series and the pitching of Phillip Van Doren, who fanned eight of his batters to pick of the win in game one which ended this morning after being halted yesterday.

In game one, the Toros took no time in getting their bats hots, a big difference from yesterday's action, as two singles would set the stage for Alia to launch his 1-2 count pitch over the left-field fence and give CSUDH the lead at 3-0. Two more runs would end the first frame and secure the Toros' lead at 5-0.

Chris Vargas would start an Urban Knight fifth inning rally as they faced a 6-1 deficit going into the frame. Vargas' strong single up the middle would eventually see him home before a Van Hanson swat would bring one more home for AAU and decrease their deficit to 6-3. The Toros would put five more on in the fifth and grab four more in the sixth behind a Brian Sturgis 3-RBI bomb to finalize the win at 15-3.

In game two, the Toros used their offensive prowess to once again dominate the Urban Knights using a powerhouse third frame to send four Toros runs safely home. Starting the action off in the third was again Carlos Leyva who sent a single through the left side to get CSUDH's bats going. An Andrew Baslow single would grant the Toros their first run of the frame, rounded out by a Lee Pope double to give CSUDH the lead at 6-1.

Picking up his sixth win of the season, Kurowski fanned seven batters in game one of today while scattering nine hits. Pitching two innings of relief, Danny Torres fanned three of his batters and allowed no hits to the Knights. Matt Phillips recorded the first win of the season following a three inning effort in game two of the day, while fanning four of his batters and scattering only three hits.

The big man in offense was no doubt 'Big Jon' Alia who blasted three of his balls over the fence to stand with a total of 15 home runs on the season. Overall, Alia went 6-of-11 while tallying seven RBIs. Paul-Michael Klingsberg was the other offensive standout, going 6-of-10 with a triple, two doubles and a single RBI in the series.

Overall the Toros belted 43 hits in 103 chances while the CSUDH 'pen kept the Knights to only 18 hits in their 83 chances.

In between games, 15 Toros in Alia, Baslow, Dean Benavidez, Keith Chipman, David Fair, Candelario Flores, Matt Hopps, Kody Kurowski, Leyva, Bret Montgomery, Phillips, Kevin Pillar, Pope, Sturgis and Trey Ursich were honored for their excellence in the classroom, on the field and in the community as part of National Student Athlete Day, celebrated annually on April 6.

Now with a 25-16 record, the Toros will resume conference play next week with a twinbill at Toro Field against UC San Diego. Fans can listen to the games online on the Toro Sports Network with David Smock calling the play-by-play action. First pitch of the double-header is set for noon on April 18th.
