Toros Use Outside Attacks to Take Down Chico State, 74-61, in CCAA Semis

San Bernardino, CA -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team (20-9) used a dominating outside attack and patience in the paint to grab a 74-61 win over the Wildcats of Chico State (16-13) in the semi-final matchup of the 2009 CCAA Basketball Championship Tournament. Leading the attack from beyond the arc was MacKenzie Mathias who tallied nine points, all of them from threes while Neka Mixon would come in with 13 of her own.

Despite a plague of turnovers in the first half, nine from the Toros and only four from the Wildcats, the Toros were able to strike deep from beyond the arc with four total good treys attributing to them never giving up the lead the first half.

An eight-point run started by a three from Kayla Montalvo quickly saw them with the lead in double-digits at 15-5, the most they would enjoy all half. Chico State would respond off a Synchro Bull layup to close the gap to 15-11, however they could not find their flow and were unable to grab a lead the entirety of the half.

Following an Aujanee Baldwin shot from inside the paint with 0:41 left on the clock, the Toros would go into the break enjoying a 32.25 lead.

Chico came back in the second to attempt to close the gap but both Mixon and Ennisha Kyles stepped up to give the Toros the intensity they would need to grab the eventual victory. On two occasion in the second, Mixon would sink a layup to bring the Toros to within one point of a 20-point lead, but the Toros were unable to grab the elusive mark.

CSUDH would go on to take all the lead it would need as a final jumper from Kyles secured the win at 74-61, advancing the Toros to the final game in the 2009 CCAA Basketball Championship Tournament.

Leading on the day for the Toros was Mixon with 13 points and six boards, amazingly scoring all of her points in the second half. Kyles, who also came alive in the second, tallied 11 points and five boards in assistance.

"I think defensively we did a nice job for the most part," says head coach Van Girard after the game. "Chico hit some big shots at the end to close the gap but with Kyles and Mixon doing much better in the second, that was the factor we needed.

"Right now the girls are focused and ready to play tomorrow so I am not displeased", he closes.

The final clincher in the win was the Toros 49.1% shooting from the floor and their 7-of-13 three-point shooting. They would only allow Chico to shoot at 32.2% and give them 27 boards while grabbing 45 of their own.

Now with a 20-9 overall record, the Toros will see action tomorrow in the final game of the CCAA championships. With the time set for 5:00pm, the Toros will face off against the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State after they defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 67-57 in today's other semi-final matchup.
