Defense Key as Toros Sweep Cal State L.A. in 2-1 & 7-6 Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Carson, CA -- Posting eight strikeouts and throwing a complete nine-inning game, Kody Kurowski won an old-fashioned pitcher's duel in a 2-1 win over No. 11 Cal State L.A. in today's opening stanza, scattering just eight hits in the masterpiece. In the final game of the series the Toros recorded 21 putouts from the field and grabbed an additional two double-plays to shut down the Golden Eagles and grab a 7-6 win.

With only one inning of scoring for the hosts in game one, all that was needed in today's win, CSUDH was led by Paul-Michael Klingsberg, who went 2-3 in the game with a double and a single.

CSUDH grabbed its two runs in the second frame behind a Klingsberg single to score  Candelario Flores and a Brian Sturgis sacrifice fly which would bring home Klingsberg.

Game two became a battle of leads and deficits as CSULA grabbed an early score in the first, but immediately found itself trailing behind a Klingsberg 2-RBI home run and Carlos Leyva double.

Three more runs for the Golden Eagles in the second gave them the lead again which CSUDH then regained. Two more runs for each team in the fourth, with CSUDH's coming behind an Andrew Baslow 2-RBI home run saw the game tied at six entering the seventh and final frame of play.

After shutting down the Golden Eagles in the top of the inning, Jon Alia got plunked in the shoulder to send him to first and, after advancing to second, the stage was set for Derrek Duarte as he smashed a deep single into right that sent Alia home just before the throw arrived to the plate to a cheering Toros bench.

The nailbiting 7-6 win gave CSUDH the 3-1 edge in the series and now puts them at a 19-14 overall record (14-10 CCAA).

Leading on the day from the offensive side was Leyva who went 4-7 with a double and a triple. Klingsberg followed with a 3-7 day including a home run and a double while Baslow gained his only hit on the day with his home run.

After fanning eight of his batters in game one, Kurowski threw his second complete game and improved his record to 5-1 to become the winningest Toro in the rotation. Danny Torres recorded his first win of the season in game two after 3.2 innings of duty with only one hit allowed.

The Toros will next see action as they travel to Utah to face off against host Dixie State in non-CCAA play. First pitch of the four-game series is set for April 2 at 7:00 pm (MountainTime).
