Golden Eagles Edge Out 6-5 Win Over Toros in Game Two of Series

Box Score
Los Angeles, CA -- In a fitting tribute to yesterday's two home runs, Carlos Leyva belted a shot over the right field fence in the Toros' first at-bat of game two against No. 11 Cal State L.A. Despite the home run CSUDH would fall behind and take the loss at 6-5 in game two of the series to stand at a 17-14 record (12-10 CCAA).

The Toros got their bats hot in no time following a Leyva solo shot that would give them the immediate edge at 1-0. Paul-Michael Klingsberg would follow the home run with a double, something he is no stranger to as he leads the team in that regard and score Andrew Baslow in the process.

After Derrek Duarte belted a back-to-back two-bagger to bring home two more for the Toros, CSUDH was eventually shut down on a routine grounder with a healthy lead at 4-0.

The Golden Eagles managed to secure their own run on the board in the bottom of the third following a Toby Davis home run which brought the score to 4-1.

Needing more room to breath, Duarte belted his second double of the game in the top of the eighth to see Klingsberg safely home and push CSUDH to a 5-1 lead which would end their scoring on the day.

It was the eighth inning that became the Toros' Achilles' heel as CSULA finally got their bats going with six hits to bring home five runs and the eventual win at 6-5. Mario Ramirez started the five-run rally with a solo home run in the first at-bat of the frame.

In the end, it was CSUDH's nine hits, not enough when compared to L.A.'s 13 that eventually cost them the game. With each team only giving up one error apiece it was a battle of getting runners on base and seeing them home as both teams were equal in batting with runners on at 4-10.

Leading the Toros from the plate was Kevin Pillar and Duarte, both of whom went 2-4 with Duarte blasting two doubles.

After 7.1 innings of duty, Phillip Van Doren would suffer the eventual loss after fanning three of his batters.

Now with a 17-14 overall record (12-10 CCAA), the Toros will wrap-up the Cal State L.A. series tomorrow on the CSUDH campus. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 11:00am at Toro Field.
