Farfan Dominant in 6-1 Win Before Toros Suffer 2-0 Loss to Visiting Chico State

Carson, CA -- Senior Regina Farfan flirted with a no-hitter for five innings before settling for a one-hit gem in Cal State Dominguez Hills' 6-1 win in the opening game of this afternoon's twinbill against visiting Chico State, but the Wildcats silenced the Toro bats in their 2-0 win in the nightcap to move the Toros to 19-11, 9-5 CCAA.

The Toros spotted Farfan all the runs she would need in the first, scoring four times for a quick 4-0 lead off Wildcat starter Lauren Walker.  After Katie Garcia doubled for the first of her two hits on the day and was moved to third, Emiley McEwen brought her home with a sharp single to right field, starting the deluge.

A Liz Vazquez RBI single and Farfan 2RBI double later ended the scoring, as Amber Angel was gunned down at home for the third out attempting to score on a Kristin Tanaka fly ball to left field.

That was more than enough for Farfan, who held the Wildcats hitless through five complete innings.  The closest sniff to a hit for CSUC up to that point came in the fifth when Christina Wieck sent a screamer up the middle, only to have Farfan stop the hot shot with her foot, regroup, and throw Wieck out at first for the last out of the inning.

Farfan ran into trouble in the sixth as the Wildcats collected their first hit of the game and scored on a bases loaded walk, but Toro reliever Kaci Carroll escaped further damage on a stellar play by Khryssi Steele, who smothered a hot smash by Gwen Cox, tagged the bag and threw out Jessie Minch at home for the third out.

The Chino native improved to 11-7 with the win, tossing 50 strikes in 78 total pitches.  Garcia, Vazquez and Jessica Marlow aided Farfan's cause with two hits apiece, with Carroll tossing 1.2 innings for her third save of the season.

The nightcap was a different story as CSUDH's Farfan and Carroll matched CSUC starter Jessica McDermott with zeros on the board through the first six innings.

The visitors had a golden chance to score in the top of the fifth after Rebecca Johnson rounded third and was on her way home on a two-out single to left by Jenna Wermes, but left fielder Katie Jordan rifled a strike to catcher Michelle Miranda, who applied the tag to Johnson for the rally killer.

That just delayed the inevitable, however, as the Wildcats strung together three hits in the seventh inning, including a Gwen Cox double down the left field line with Kait Manning on third that tipped off the glove of a diving Steele to bring home the game's first run, with a R. Johnson double to left bringing home an insurance run in the Wildcat 2-0 win, forging a split of today's twinbill.

CSUDH and CSUC resume action tomorrow morning to complete the four-game set, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 11:00 am on Toro Diamond.
