Softball Gives Head Coach Maier 300th Win in 1-0 and 12-0 Wins Over CS San Bernardino

Kaci Carroll (L) got the win while Liz Vazquez knocked in the game-winner to give head coach Jim Maier his 300th win as Toros head coach

Carson, CA -- Although a January baby, Cal State Dominguez Hills softball head coach Jim Maier was treated to a belated or (very) early birthday present as the Toros combined stellar pitching with clutch hitting to give Maier his 300th career win as Toros' head coach in 1-0 and 12-0 non-conference wins over visiting CS San Bernardino, improving the Toros to 18-10 overall.

CSUDH got the only run it would need in the opening game as Katie Garcia reached on a Yote fielding error to open the frame in the first, and scored on a Liz Vazquez single after moving to second on a sacrifice two batters earlier.

That was just enough for Toro starter Regina Farfan, who limited CSUSB to just four hits while fanning seven in the complete-game shutout.

The closest the visitors came to scoring was in the third inning after two Toro errors to open the frame helped load the bases with one out, but Farfan induced CSUSB's Ashley Collinwood to hit into a fielder's choice at the plate, and Maggie Karros to ground to third base to end the threat.

Growing stronger as the game progressed, Farfan allowed a two-out triple in the seventh, but fanned Courtney Wilhelms swinging to end the game.

Vazquez tallied the game's lone RBI while Kristin Tanaka went 2-for-2 on the day.

The nightcap was over in the first inning as CSUDH sent 14 batters to the plate en route to 8 runs on 8 hits, the big blows coming six RBI singles, a 2RBI baseknock by Khryssi Steele and a CSUSB error.

CSUDH put up four more in its next at-bat as Steele hammered home another 2RBI single en route to her 4-for-4 effort, with Emiley McEwen tallying the final two runs of the game on a booming 2RBI double to right center field.

All four Toro pitchers saw action in the late game, with Kaci Carroll picking up the win as the first reliever to enter, tossing 2.0 innings with two hits allowed.

Steele led the Toros with four hits and four RBI, followed by Vazquez's three hit, three RBI effort, with McEwen's double accounting for the only extra base hit on the afternoon as CSUDH out-hit CSUSB 18-7.

Now in his ninth year as head coach of the Toros, Jim Maier added to his legacy as the winningest softball coach in CSUDH history.  In his eight years, Maier has averaged over 35 wins a season, and reached the NCAA postseason in five of the last six campaigns.

The La Habra resident attained the 200-win mark on February 28, 2006, and has had a role in 43 players being selected to All-CCAA teams, 11 being tabbed All-West Region, and one who twice was named an All-American.

The Toros, now 18-10 on the year, host Chico State for a four-game CCAA Conference set this weekend, beginning Friday with first pitch set for 1:00 pm on Toro Diamond.
