Steele Shines as Toros Again Split Against No. 4 Humboldt State

Game 1  Game 2

Arcata, CA -- Sophomore Khryssi Steele enjoyed a 4-for-8 performance at the plate as the Toros again took the nightcap to salvage a split at defending NCAA Champion and 4th-ranked Humboldt State this morning, taking a 6-5 win after dropping the opener, 5-2.

After dropping game one, all signs pointed in favor of a Jack sweep after HSU took an early 5-0 lead in the nightcap after putting up all five runs in the bottom of the second inning, using two blasts as part of the frame's 6-hit attack.

The Toros, however, clawed back with three runs in their fourth inning at-bat as Kristin Tanaka belted a two-out 2RBI double, and came home herself on a Katie Jordan RBI single one batter later.

CSUDH climbed all the way back one inning later as a Steele basehit started the rally, coming home on an Amber Angel RBI single, followed by a Kaci Carroll RBI baseknock to knot the game at 5-5.

Senior Liz Vazquez put an exclamation point on the comeback two innings later by hammering a home run to lead off the seventh, eventually giving the Toros the one-run win.

Carroll hurled 5.2 innings in relief to pick up the win (6-2) as Steele's 3-for-4 day set the offensive table for the Toros.

In the opener, the Jacks opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning on a Marissa Slattery deep blast with two runners on.

Despite 10 hits on the day, including two each by Katie Garcia and Jessica Marlow, CSUDH was only able to put across single runs in the second and sixth off HSU hurler Nichole Parada, who picked up the win to go 8-1.

The Toros, now 16-10, 8-4 CCAA, host CS San Bernardino on Tuesday, March 17, in a non-conference make-up twinbill that was postponed due to rain earlier this year, with first pitch of game one set for 1:00 pm on Toro Diamond.
