Cal Poly Pomona Sweeps Pair From Toros

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Pomona, CA -- One-run CCAA Conference road games were unkind to the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team this afternoon as host Cal Poly Pomona took a pair of one-run affairs in 3-2 and 6-5 wins over the Toros, dropping CSUDH to 12-12, 8-8 CCAA.  Candelario Flores went 3-for-5 on the afternoon to pace the offense.

CSUDH got the twinbill started on the right foot after scoring twice in their first inning at-bats off CPP starter Kevin Bosson as Jon Alia drove home the game's first run, but Bosson settled down after the frame without allowing another Toro to cross home plate.

That proved to be CSUDH's downfall as the hosts picked up single runs in the second, sixth and ninth innings to pull out the 3-2 come-from-behind victory, picking up 13 hits and handing Paul-Michael Klingsberg the loss in relief.

The nightcap started in stark contrast to the opener as CPP put across three runs in their second inning at-bat to start the scoring, only to have the Toros answer with three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.

CPP, however, clawed back with two of its own in the sixth to tie, and then staged its second come-from-behind victory in as many games by tallying the game-winner in their final at-bat to seal the sweep.

Kevin Pillar taliled three hits and scored twice on the afternoon, with Dean Benavidez driving home two runs in the late game.  Toro ace Bret Montgomery was saddled with the loss in a rare relief appearance, allowing one run in two-thirds of an inning pitched.

The Toros take a break from CCAA play with a non-conference single game at Vanguard University on Tuesday, March 17, before returning home to host Chico State beginning Friday afternoon.
