Toros Send Broncos Running For the Hills in 21-4 Series Opener Win

Box Score
Carson, CA -- Just seven runs shy of the team's game-run record set in 2002, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team grabbed 21 runs and gave Cal Poly Pomona only four in the opening game of the series today. Both Kevin Pillar and Jon Alia blasted a hit apiece over the 390-foot outfield fence to lead the Toros to an easy win.

Despite the 17-run advantage, the Toros knotted the game in only the second off a rally started by a Dean Benavidez double to right field. A following Brian Sturgis double would bring home Benavidez to give the Toros the lead at 2-0. A Pillar single that landed deep in left would bring home two more for the Toros which was not enough as Alia would connect on his first pitch for an even deeper left field triple to bring an additional two and end scoring for the Toros at 7-0.

The Broncos grabbed their first run in the third as a Joe Villa single would eventually result in a run following a passed ball.

CSUDH had its biggest inning of the game in the fourth with a total of four hits and four CPP errors - all of theirs in the game - would give the Toros nine additional runs. Pillar landed his first home run of the season two tally three RBIs while a Sturgis double, his second of the game, gave him an RBI.

The Toros saw their bats cool off slightly in the
succeeding innings scoring only five more runs as the Broncos were able to finally get theirs going in the final frame of play. A David Jaques single would bring home Manuel Navarro and Frank Klopp to give CPP two more in the top of the ninth, hardly enough as the Toros would shut them down for a 21-4 win.

CSUDH was led by the bats of Stugis, Alia and Pillar with a respective four, three and three hits. Both Pillar and Alia tallied one home run apiece, with Alia's being his sixth of the season. Pillar's six RBIs was just two shy of the CSUDH single-game record with both Alia and Pillar also one run shy of the single game record of five.

From the mound, Bret Montgomery threw for six complete innings to grab his fourth win of the season and keep his picture-perfect record alive. He fanned eight of his 27 batters along the way and gave up only five hits.

As a team the Toros smacked 17 hits in their 43 at-bats, while the Broncos tallied 8 in their 38.

Now with a 12-9 record (8-5 CCAA), the Toros will once again host the Broncos tomorrow in game two of the series with first pitch set at 3:00pm.
