Montgomery and Offense Shine in 5-1 and 14-4 Sweep Over Cal Poly Pomona

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Game 1    Game 2

Carson, CA -- Much to the dismay of visiting Cal Poly Pomona, Mother Nature decided to give Toro Field a break this morning allowing senior ace Bret Montgomery to hurl 7 innings in an eventual 5-1 win over the Broncos in game one, while CSUDH pounded out 18 hits in a 14-4 rout of the Broncos in game two.  With the wins, the Toros improve to 4-2 on the year.

In the opener, the Toros spotted Montgomery two runs in the first two innings on an unearned score in the first, and a Dean Benavidez RBI triple in the second.

Though not his sharpest on an overcast and chilly day at Toro Field, Montgomery was sharp enough early on as he scattered six hits over the first five innings, with CPP stranding six runners through those five frames, including two each in the second and third innings.

With the score 2-1 Toros heading into the bottom of the 3rd, Paul-Michael Klingsberg increased CSUDH's edge with a solo blast to right field, before the hosts tacked on two more runs in the 5th on a Jon Alia RBI single and a Klingsberg RBI groundout to give CSUDH a 5-1 lead.

Facing just seven batters over the 6th and 7th innings, Montgomery gave way to Michael Cruz, who also faced seven batters over his two innings of work in relief.

Carlos Leyva and Benavidez led the offense with two hits apiece in the win.

There was no question about the outcome in the nightcap as the Toros put up five runs in the first, courtesy of a 2RBI single by Sean Beckley and a 2RBI triple by Ade Olanrewaju .

After adding another pair of runs one inning later on a Leyva bomb and a CPP error, CSUDH put the game away with three runs in both the 4th and 5th innings on 11 total hits, with two of the runs coming on an Alia 2-run blast in the 5th.

The visitors put together three runs in their final at-bat in the 7th off CSUDH reliever Danny Torres, the big blow coming on a McDowell 2-run blast, but it was too little too late in the eventual 14-4 rout.

Kody Kurowski picked up his first win as a Toro after hurling 5.0 innings, allowing just one earned run and four Ks, while Leyva (3-5, 3R), Alia (3-5, 2R, 4RBI) and Beckley (3-4, 2RBI) paced the offensive attack.

The Toros continue non-conference action against CCAA opponents on Tuesday, February 10, as they visit cross-town rival Cal State L.A. for a single game beginning at 2:00 pm.
