Toros Handed First 2009 Loss, 7-6 at Cal Poly Pomona

Box Score
Pomona, CA -- Though posting 12 hits and giving the host Broncos only seven, the Toros saw their record drop to 2-1 in a 7-6 loss on the road at Cal Poly Pomona. With three hits, two runs and RBIs, Carlos Leyva put in his best effort to keep the Toros on a three-game win streak.

The Toros seemed to be on the right track, posting two on the board in the first after a Leyva single and two subsequent stolen bases put him in healthy territory on third base. After a Pomona error off a Jon Alia hit brought him home, Alia would grab the second digit, again off an error and put CSUDH up 2-0.

Keeping the Broncos in check until the bottom of the fifth, it was ultimately untimely pitching that put CPP up at 4-2 as the Toros would only give up one hit and tally one error as the Broncos would take advantage of walked batters to create scoring opportunities.

After Pomona again scored in the sixth off a Richard McDowell homer, the Toros looked to even the score in a two-hit seventh inning. Following a Leyva double that would bring home both Michael Stowers and Brian Sturgis, Leyva would even the game, driven home by a John Skala single.

Ultimately the game would be decided in the eighth in favor of the host team as two hits would drive home two runs for Pomona. CSUDH's lone run in the final inning following a Alia single which brought home Skala was not enough, deciding the game 7-6, Broncos.

Picking up the loss was Phillip Van Doren who is now holding a record of 0-1 after his 3.0 innings pitched. Aside from his three hits, and two runs and RBIs, Leyva also grabbed two stolen bags to lead the Toros defensiveley. Paul-Michael Klingsberg blasted four total hits, however with now runners on the Toros could not deliver on them.

Now with a 2-1 record, CSUDH will again face off at Cal Poly Pomona tomorrow at 2:00pm.
