Arcata, CA -- Having clinched at least a share of the CCAA Title with last night's win over Sonoma State, Cal State Dominguez Hills fell just short in its quest for taking the league crown outright after falling 75-71 at Humboldt State tonight, ending the regular season in a three-way tie for first with Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona, all with identical 15-5 league records.  Rodney Yearby led the Toros with 17 points and 9 boards.

The hosts were far from hospitable in the early going, turning a 4-point deficit into a 9-point lead on a Ketih Davis tip-in at the 7:02 mark of the first half.  CSUDH caught fire behind a Yearby layup, a Jonathan Toliver triple and one by Yearby to close the gap to 22-21, before another Toliver trey after a 'Jack bucket tied the game at 24-24 with just over three minutes left in the opening session, before HSU settled for a 29-27 lead heading in to the break.

After the Toros tied the game on a pair of Michael Hernandez foul shots to open the second half, Humboldt again went on a scoring surge to take a 9-point lead at 40-31 just three minutes in, before CSUDH answered behind a Jerrell Smith flush, a Ryan Walton 3-pointer and two Ward free throws to cut its deficit to 43-41 at 13:47.

Humboldt State, however, refused to send its seniors home with a loss in the regular season finale, going on a 22-11 run to take a commanding 67-52 lead with just four minutes left in regulation.

As the Toros have done all year, however, CSUDH mounted a charge behind its defense and poor foul shooting by the Jacks to trim HSU's 15 point cushion to 9 at 71-62 with 1:12 on the clock, to 6 at 73-67 with 45 ticks left, and to just 2 at 73-71 on a Yearby layup with two seconds left in the game.

Forced to foul, Jack Zac Tiedeman iced the game with two foul shots to give HSU the 75-71 win, putting an end to the Toros' seven-game win streak, and dropping them into a three-way tie atop the CCAA Conference after wins by the Coyotes and Broncos earlier.

In addition to Yearby's output, Ward added 17 points and 6 boards, while Hernandez finished with 13 points and 7 assists.

Now at 21-6, 15-5 CCAA, the Toros, seeded second in the CCAA Tournament after the third tie-breaker, will kick off the CCAA Tournament with a first round game in the Torodome at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, March 3, against seventh-seeded Cal State Monterey Bay.
