Toros Exhibit Nerves of "Steele" in 8-4 and 3-2 Wins Over Academy of Arts

Carson, CA -- One day after being swept by Grand Canyon, sophomore Khryssi Steele took matters into her own hands by going 7-8 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI as the Toros handed visiting Academy of Arts 8-4 and 3-2 defeats this afternoon to even their record at 7-7 on the year.

The Toros scored all their runs in the first two innings in the opener, as two 2-run homers in the first from Emiley McEwen and CSUDH starter Regina Farfan staked Farfan to a 4-0 lead after one inning of play.

The Urban Knights cut the deficit in half in their second inning at bat, before a McEwen RBI single in the second inning preceded an Amber Angel 3-run shot to left field, giving the Toros an 8-2 lead.

UAA scored single runs in the 4th and 6th innings, before the pitching duo of Farfan and Kaci Carroll shut the door on the San Francisco-based school.

All nine Toros in the starting batting order garnered a hit off AAU starter Sierrah Garcia, while Shampayne Clay matched the Toros offensive leader with three hits of her own.

CSUDH again raced out to an early lead in the nightcap after Angel brought home Katie Garcia, who walked to lead off the inning.

The visitors, however, took their first lead of the afternoon with two in the third inning on an RBI single by Alana Aweau and an RBI double by Nicole Palmer, only to see the Toros tie the game two innings later on a Steele RBI baseknock to bring home Carroll from second.

That set the stage for the bottom of the 7th when Steele completed her perfect day by slapping an opposite field single through the left side of the infield, bringing home pinch-runner Michelle Miranda with the game-winner.

In addition to Steele's four-hit afternoon and seven on the day, Angel and Garcia both enjoyed two hits apiece in the nightcap as CSUDH evened its record over the weekend.

The Toros resume CCAA Conference play next weekend as Cal State Monterey Bay visits Carson, with first pitch of Friday's game one set for 1:00 pm on Toro Diamond.
