Carson, CA -- It has taken 13 years but under the direction of head coach Murphy Su'a the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team opened CCAA play with a record of 3-1 (7-5 overall) after splitting today's twinbill against Sonoma State with a 5-1 win and 11-8 loss. The Toros last had a record this good when in 1996 they opened up CCAA play 5-0. Kody Kurowski grabbed his third win of the 2009 season after pitching his first complete game (seven innings), while fanning four batters and allowing only five hits.

Despite an 11-8 loss in game one of today's play, the Toros managed seven hits, resulting in eight runs. Jon Alia swatted two singles and brought home one runner to lead on the offensive end with help from Sean Beckley who picked up three RBIs on the day, two of which came off a deep single in the Toros seventh.

Though taking his first loss of the 2009 season, Matt Hopps threw for five complete innings, shutting down four of his 18 batters and allowing only three hits in his 90 pitches thrown, the most of any pitcher in the game which featured a total of eight among the two teams.

The Toros grabbed the lead early in the second game, refusing to even their record to the Seawovles of Sonoma State, a team they have not beat more than twice in a season in the history of the two programs series.

Without using a single substitution in the seven inning game, CSUDH was able to easily grab a 5-1 win, outhitting Sonoma eight to five. With identical statistics on the pitching side it was the three hit difference that knotted the game for CSUDH as Sonoma would strand nine of their runners opposed to CSUDH's four.

Both Paul-Michael Klingsberg and Andrew Baslow picked up two hits apiece in the win, while Kurowski is finding himself as the goto from the bullpen as he picked up his third win of the season.

All told, CSUDH banged out 37 hits in the four-game series while giving up 31 to Sonoma. The main difference came down to total bases as the Toros grabbed 51, while Sonoma had 39.

Now with a record of 7-5 (3-1 CCAA). The Toros will next see action this following weekend as they take on the Gators of San Francisco State on the road. Game one of the series is set on Friday, February 27th with first pitch at 2:00pm.
