Toros Swept in Grand Style Against Antelopes

Carson, CA -- Visiting Grand Canyon got the last word in an 8-7 slugfest to open the Friday afternoon twinbill on Toro Diamond with 4 runs in the sixth inning for the win, before blanking the Toros 5-0 in the nightcap to sweep the twinbill.  Freshman Emiley McEwen (pictured) went 2-3 with two runs scored while senior Regina Farfan belted a 3-run home run in the game one loss.

Only garnering three hits in the game two loss, CSUDH was unable to hold on to much as they had only one scoring opportunity which stranded Kristin Tanaka on third as the inning drew to a close. Grabbing first after a fielder's choice, Tanaka made it to third as a 'Lopes error off Khryssi Steele's bat brought her around. With the inevitable squeeze play squelching any hopes of a Toro runner coming home, GCU was able to grab the eventual win at 5-0.

CSUDH played a completely different game in the opener, capitalizing on eight total hits to put constant pressure on the 'Lopes.

Though down 4-0 going into the first, Liz Vazquez grabbed first off a fielder's choice which brought up McEwen who was able to get on the bag with a single down the left line. Farfan notched three easy runs for CSUDH, belting her shot over the fence to bring the score to 4-3.

CSUDH grabbed the lead in the third after a McEwen single, Amber Angel double and Farfan reaching first on a Grand Canyon error.  All three eventually made it across the plate to knot the score at 6-4 in favor of CSUDH.

However, six 'Lopes hits in the sixth inning garnered four more runs to give GCU the final lead at 8-7.

Along with her home run, Farfan scored two runs to help the Toros offense. McEwen rounded out the batting with two runs and three hits in the losses. Farfan also pitched a total of 9.3 innings on the day to add two losses to her record which now stands at an even keel of 4-4. She struckout a total of three batters on the day.

Now with a 5-7 overall record, the Toros will continue non-conference action as they face off agains the Urban Knights of Academy of Arts University (San Francisco) in a twinbill set to begin at 11:00 am tomorrow.
