Toros Trump Seawolves in CCAA Opening Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Carson, CA -- Coming to Carson with a perfect 7-0 record, the Sonoma State Seawolves were no match for the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball squad as the Toros took them in both games with 4-2 and 6-5 wins to improve the Toros to 6-4 (2-0 CCAA).

En route to picking up his third win in the 2009 season, Bret Montgomery (pictured) fanned seven of his 19 batters faced in his 6.0 innings pitched in the first game of the set. In game two, Keith Chipman came in for duties in the top of the tenth to face two batters and strike out one for the first win of the season.

Reaching base on a fielder's choice and bringing home Carlos Leyva in the process, Jon Alia started a trend that would give the Toros an easy first win in CCAA competition. After scoring in the third an Andrew Baslow double in the sixth, which saw Alia come home would bring the score to 3-2, all the Toros would need to grab a 4-2 victory.

Game two was much more heated as a 5-1 CSUDH lead in the top of the eighth crumbled down as the Seawolves brought home four of their own. A Thomas Pope single that brought home two of Sonoma's runners eventually created a tied game at 4-4 before Paul-Michael Klingsberg, who saw action in two complete innings, was able to shut down the Seawolves bats.

Again it was Alia who would even the score as a single in the bottom of the tenth who bring home Michael Stowers and give the Toros a Friday sweep.

Alia was the standout on the day from the plate with four hits, one run and three RBIs in his eight at bats. Both Luis Perez and Leyva knotted two runs and three hits apiece with Perez hitting for two doubles.

Now with a 6-4 record (2-0 CCAA), the Toros will complete the series with Sonoma tomorrow in a double-header. First pitch of the day is slated for 11:00am.
