Toros Volleyball Lends a Hand to 'Digs 4 Kids' at Carson High School

Head coach Scott Davenport and Marissa Anderson
Carson, CA -- For the third straight year the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's volleyball team began participation in the 'Digs 4 Kids' program, an academic and athletic mentoring program founded by Olympic Gold Medalist Eric Fonoimoana. This year they lent a hand at Carson High School, reaching out to elementary school kids.

A large session so far, the volleyball team volunteered their time to more than 70 kids, with help from the D4K Education Foundation and local high schooler's. The program, now in it's second week, runs for a total of eight weeks. The CSUDH volleyball team will help out every Wednesday from 3 to 6pm for the remainder of the six weeks.

In her first year volunteering in the program, volleyball player Heather Rushton reflects on last night's experience, "It felt really good to teach math and other skills to the kids and to have the chance to interact with them. I think it is good for us as a team to have the experience of volunteering our time together and to bond as a team."

"I feel that it has been an extremely positive experience for our girls to have the opportunity to work with such an impactful program such as 'Digs 4 Kids'," says head coach Scott Davenport. "Eric and Albert [Hannemann]
, are long-time friends of mine and have done a phenomenal job of supporting and uplifting our local community. It is a privilege to be able to work with such inspirational and generous people. We are looking forward to continuing this relationship for a very long time."

“Digging Education” is the primary activity of D4K, and is an innovative project that combines after school volleyball lessons with academic mentoring and tutoring.  Students receive tutoring, mentoring, and life-lesson counseling, and then participate in volleyball instruction and training.  The program, which takes place from 3pm to 6pm, responds to a need for positive afterschool activity when many kids are unsupervised and prone to involvement in dangerous or illegal activity.
