Mother Nature Makes Statement in 4-3 and 4-2 Split With Sonoma State

Nightcap called after 5 due to rain in CSUDH Loss

Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills blasted its way to a 4-3 game one win over visiting Sonoma State, but dropped a 4-2 game two decision after rain ended the game after five full innings, bringing CSUDH to 3-5, 1-1 CCAA.  Sophomore Kristin Tanaka belted the game-winning blast in the opener.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth in game one, the Toros rallied behind Emiley McEwen and Tanaka 2-run bombs in the 5th to erase the SSU lead and capture their first CCAA victory of 2009.

With the visiting Seawolves putting one on the board first after Janelle Arnold reached on an error and subsequently stole home, the Toros struggled to find their groove early.

Sonoma added two more to their tally in the fourth and fifth frames off an unearned run from Nikki Jaime and a Nicole Cordova double that brought in Arnold for the second run she would score in the contest.

With only three innings of play left the Toros mounted a rally as a Khryssi Steele  single was followed by McEwen's blast, cutting CSUDH's deficit to just 3-2.

Another single later in the inning, this time from Liz Vazquez, set the table for Tanaka, who belted a liner over the center field fence for her first career home run, and the eventual game-winner.

Toro starter Regina Farfan tossed a complete game with three strikeouts, allowing four hits in the win.

In the wet nightcap, CSUDH spotted SSU a run in the second, but tied the game in their 2nd inning at-bat after Jennifer Tellez brought home Tanaka, who doubled to open the frame and moved to 3B on a Jessica Marlow sacrifice.

The Seawolves, however, exploded for three runs in the 3rd, the big blow coming on a a Nicole Cordova 2-run bomb to center field, taking the lead for good.

CSUDH struck back in the 4th after Farfan singled to left to begin the frame, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored after the SSU left fielder misplayed a Vazquez single.

With the score 4-2 in favor of the Seawolves, Mother Nature made her presence felt at Toro Diamond, prompting the umpires to call the game after five complete innings of play.

Weather permitting, the two teams hook up tomorrow morning for a 12 noon start.
