Woeful First Half Dooms Toros in 65-46 Loss at Humboldt State

ARCATA, Calif. -- Suffering a woeful first half after making just five baskets en route to a 39-15 halftime deficit, Cal State Dominguez Hills failed to recover in a 65-46 loss by way of host Humboldt State tonight to give the Toros their fifth-straight loss in falling to 1-5, 1-2 CCAA, while the Lumberjacks improved to 4-1, 3-0 CCAA.

The hosts wasted little time in asserting themselves in their new gymnasium, rattling off the firsts 7 points en route to building a 12-2 lead just five minutes into the contest.  The Toros looked to emit a heartbeat after a Kayla Montalvo trey on the ensuing possession cut the lead to seven, but HSU out-scored the Toros 17-5 over the next 10 minutes for a 29-10 lead before increasing it to 37-10 until a Leniece Arevalo foul shot momentarily stopped the first-half bleeding as the 'Jacks took a 39-15 lead into the break.

A Brandie McCann freebie to begin the second half scoring got CSUDH off to a quick start as the visitors cut the lead to 18 at 40-22 on a Kala Amico jumper at the 15:56 mark.  HSU answered with a 9-0 run to push its cushion back to 27, before the Toros answered themselves over the next five minutes, using a Whitney Gantt triple to cut the lead back to 20 at 51-31.

CSUDH's deficit got as low as 14 at 56-42 on a pair of McCann freebies, but the hosts' lead continued to hover in mid-to-high double-figures before eventually running away with the 65-46 win.

Montalvo led the Toros with 13 points and 4 boards, while McCann and Amico chipped in with 9 and 8 points, respectively.  Brittney Taylor led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, while teammate Taylor Kilgore contributed 12 in HSU's blowout win.

In shooting just 24.6% for the game, the Toros failed to score 50 points for the third straight contest while matching their previous two outputs with tonight's 46-point effort.  Conversely, the 'Jacks were a solid 41.4% from the field, and used that shooting acumen to negate their disappointing .379 free throw percentage (11-of-29).

The Toros, now 1-5, 1-2 CCAA, look to stop their skid in a non-conference match-up on Monday, December 21, when visiting Dixie State pays a visit to southern California.  Due to work being done on the Torodome floor, the contest will be played in the Eagles Nest on the campus of Cal State L.A., with first tip set for 5:30 pm.
