Sonoma State Upends Toros in Low-Scoring 54-46 Battle

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Looking to go 2-0 in the CCAA on their first road trip of the year, the Toros ran into a cold shooting night in a 54-46 loss to host Sonoma State tonight in the Seawolf Gym.  Kala Amico was the lone Toro in double-figure scoring with 10 points, compared to three double-figure scorers for the hosts.

The Seawolves jumped out from the opening tip, taking a 14-4 lead with 9 minutes elapsed in the first half, before the Toros warmed up over the next 8 minutes, cutting their deficit to 17-16 on a Brandie McCann triple with 3:38 left in the half.  McCann's trey fired up SSU, however, as the hosts went on a 5-0 run to enter the half with a 22-16 lead.

After a jumper by Amico got the Toros to within four at 22-18 to start the second half, SSU scored the next 13 points to take a 35-18 lead, all but putting the game away with 15 minutes left in regulation.  CSUDH clawed its way back, eventually cutting its deficit to single digits at 42-34 on a Barbara Houston layup and trimming it to 43-39 on another Houston gimme, only to have the Seawolves reply with 5-straight points to increase their lead to a comfortable margin at 48-39 with 1:32 left in the game in the eventual 54-46 Seawolf win.

Jennifer Russo led a trio of Seawolves with 13 points, with Stephanie Barnes and Oly Larkin chipping in 11 each.  As a team, CSUDH shot just 34.0% compared to only 32.0% for SSU, but the hosts won the battle at the free throw line, converting 16-of-23 to just 7-of-15 for the Toros.

CSUDH, now 1-4, 1-1 CCAA, travels to Arcata to battle Humboldt State on Saturday in a rematch of last year's CCAA Tournament final, won by the Toros.
