Toros Succumb to Steals & Freebies in 67-57 Loss to Dixie State

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Despite better shooting from the floor in both halves, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team fell victim to 13 Red Storm steals before dropping a 67-57 decision to visiting Dixie State.  Carrying the offense, Brandie McCann tallied 18 points to lead all Toros.

After falling behind early after the opening tip, the Toros rebounded following a McCann layup to take the lead at 15-13 halfway through the first.

CSUDH held the lead for five minutes before DSC's Tanya Clark, who totaled 17 points, sank two freebies to start a 10-point push for the Red Storm.

A final Barbara Houston jumper sent CSUDH into the break with a 39-34 deficit and a 48.1 shooting percentage.  The Red Storm would shoot only 42.4 in the first.

Once again out-shooting their foes 32.1 to 28.6, steals and free throws sent the Toros into an unrecoverable deficit in the second.

At the end of the night, 10 of DSC's players had at least one steal, adding to a team total of 13.  The Toros grabbed only six throughout the night, led by McCann and Whitney Gantt with two apiece.

Shooting at the line was the nights other key factor as CSUDH made only 12-of-21 attempts while the Red Storm was nearly perfect with 24-of-30.

Overall McCann and Gantt led the Toro effort with a respective 18 and 15 points. Gantt led on the boards as well with seven. Houston made a solid effort with both six points and rebounds.

The Red Storm ended with three players scoring in double-digits, Clark with 17, Deana Daniels 13 and Johnna Brown with 12.

The loss drops the Toros to a 1-6 overall mark, the worst starting record since 1996. CSUDH will next see action as they take on the Saints of St. Martin's Unversity on Wednesday, once again on the campus of Cal State L.A. due to work being done on the Torodome floor.  Tip-off is slated at 12:00pm.
