Toros Blaze Past Golden Eagles in 87-60 Season Opener Win

CARSON, Calif. -- One of four Toros scoring in double-digits, Kayla Montalvo grabbed 21 points to send the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team to a 87-60 victory over the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles in each team's regular season opener.

Four Toros scored a combined 63 of CSUDH's 87 points with newcomer Aundria Anderson grabbing 17, returner MacKenzie Mathias 16 and Teriana Loftin earning 11 from the paint.

The Golden Eagles were led by Jameiz Terrell with 17 points while Jazzi Johnson came in with 10.

The Toros came out strong from beyond the arc, shooting on a 72-percent clip while going 50-percent overall from the floor, a huge advantage over L.A.'s 30-percent shooting.

Of Montalvo's 21 points, 15 went down as three-pointers while Mathias grabbed nine points off threes as well.

The Toros were on fire in the defense as well, grabbing 32 rebounds to CSULA's 28, led by Anderson and Barbara Houston both with six.

The Eagles got the game started first, holding a 6-0 lead the first three minutes of action. Reversing the momentum, CSUDH grabbed their biggest first-half lead at 18 points, sending the board to 38-20 with 3:56 left in the first half.

The Golden Eagles found a groove in the second half, cutting the deficit to as little as five points on two occasions before the Toros got the bull running and ran up to a 23-point lead at 76-53 off two Loftin freebies.

A final Montalvo lay ended scoring for CSUDH and finished the game at 87-60.

The win gives CSUDH a 1-0 record (1-0 CCAA) to start the 2009-10 campaign. The Toros will next see action as they take on Azusa Pacific University on Tuesday, November 24. Tip-off is slated for 5:00pm.
