Sherman Leads Toros to 2-0 Blanking of No. 22 Seattle Pacific

Box Score
CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills, seeded No. 6 in the latest NCAA West Region poll, made things interesting tonight by dominating No. 3 seed and 22nd-ranked Seattle Pacific in a 2-0 victory, two nights after the Falcons dropped a 2-1 decision at top-seeded and 10th-ranked Cal State L.A.  John Sherman tallied the game-winner in the 60th minute to give CSUDH its eighth-straight win against SPU.

The Toros started quick, tallying a 9-2 shot advantage in the first frame.  Marco Pulido nearly notched the game's first score as halftime neared, but his knuckle-ball from 25 yards was speared by SPU keeper Kaleb Kuehn to send the two teams into halftime scoreless.

The zeros didn't stay on the board for long after Sherman collected a rebound after a Brian Alvarez shot attempt in front of the Falcon net, and sent a low line drive past to the left corner past a diving Kuehn.

That's where the score remained until the 81st minute when Kevin Gallaugher headed an Andrew Marinez corner kick up and over Kuehn for a 2-0 lead.

CSUDH nearly made it 3-0 on its next possession after a nifty reverse dribble by Marinez found Tyler Petry 10 yards out, but Petry's loft sailed over the net to keep the Falcons within striking distance.

The Toros, however, had other ideas after continually moving forward towards the Falcon zone.

Sherman was terrific tonight, using his quickness to penetrate and put pressure on the Falcon defense the entire contest.

Kuehn finished with 5 saves on the night as SPU fell to 10-4-3, while the Toro defense prevented the 22nd-ranked Falcons from getting a shot on goal.

CSUDH, now 12-5-1 and winners of six-straight, concludes its regular season on the road with key CCAA contests at Cal State East Bay and UC San Diego next weekend.
