Cal Poly Pomona Doubles Up on National Champions, 4-2

Box Score
POMONA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills saw its modest two-game win streak come to a screeching halt as host Cal Poly Pomona avenged an earlier 1-0 defeat in Carson with a resounding 4-2 win this afternoon as Bronco Tyler Reinhart scored a school-record 4 goals.  John Sherman (pictured) and Scott Locken tallied the goals in the Toro loss.

The win marked the first for CPP over the perennial CCAA favorite since 2005, improving the Broncos to 5-5, 3-4 CCAA, while the Toros fell to 6-4-1, 5-3-1 CCAA.

Reinhart put CPP on the scoreboard when he scored a header on a free kick from senior Miguel Abascal in the game's 4th minute. Fifteen minutes later, Reinhart again scored on a cross from sophomore Nick Costanza, who placed the ball to Abascal, who fired to Reinhart from five feet out.

But CSUDH was not to be denied in the opening 45 minutes.  Sherman scored his first goal of the season on a feed from Tyler Petry and Andrew Marinez in the 27th minute, before tying the game at 2-2 on Locken's shot from Sherman in the 34th minute sending the two teams into intermission tied.

Reinhart's third goal of the game arrived in the 73rd minute. He raced down the right side and forced Toros GK Marcus Dickerson to pop out. Reinhart then punched it past the right side and CPP led 3-2.

And for added measure, Reinhart earned a breakaway goal that was unassisted in the 80th minute.

Reinhart tied the school record in goals scored in a game with five others in the season opener.

The Broncos were out-shot 24-16, but Broncos goalkeeper Thomas Ryan turned back 11 shots as he improved to 2-2-0.

The Toros look to get back on the winning track on Sunday as they travel to Cal State San Bernardino.
