Mariano's Late-Game Heroics Lift Toros to 2-1 Win at Humboldt State

Box Score
ARCATA, Calif. -- Senior Scott Mariano waited 89 minutes and 33 seconds to take his first shot in this morning's key California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Humboldt State, but it was well worth the wait as the fourth-year senior sent his blast under Lumberjack keeper David Zwick for the game-winner in CSUDH's thrilling 2-1 win to move the Toros to 8-5-1, 7-4-1 CCAA.

With both teams coming off huge upset wins on Friday - CSUDH's 2-0 win at No. 7 Sonoma State and HSU's 3-0 win vs. No. 1 Cal State L.A. - neither team found success early despite 8 shots by the Toro and 4 from the hosts.

That all changed after the break, however, as Andrew Marinez netted the game's first score after collecting a loose rebound and firing his blast past Zwick near post for a 1-0 lead at 57:21.

Humboldt State equalized 18 minutes later after a Tony Ramirez feed off a set piece found Roland Demombynes, who headed his score past sprawling CSUDH keeper Markus Dickerson to tie the game at 1 apiece.

The contest looked to be headed into overtime until Mariano's heroics, which gave the Toros a northern California sweep heading into the final CCAA Conference double-header at home this weekend.

The Toros out-shot the 'Jacks 17-11, and tallied 5 corners to HSU's 3, with Dickerson making 5 saves compared to Zwicks' 6.

CSUDH concludes its CCAA Conference homestand next weekend as UC San Diego visits Carson for a 4:30 pm match-up on October 16, as part of "Homecoming Week" festivities.
