Toros Can't Clinch It In Final Minutes In 59-51 Loss to Cal Poly Pomona

Pomona, CA -- Despite shooting equally as well from the floor and slightly better from the charity line, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team was unable to secure a weekend road-sweep as they fell to the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona 59-51, dropping them to a record of 12-7 (7-5 CCAA). Leading in scoring on the night was Neka Mixon with 18 points and seven rebounds, while also grabbing three blocks.

The Toros started up the game first, putting six on the board, courtesy of two Mixon triples. A fiery Bronco offense in Stephisha Walton and Emily Nichols responded to grab back the lead from the Toros, where it would stay with Pomona the length of the night.

Though succumbing to a 12-point deficit in the first half with 11:46 to go, smart shooting from Teriana Loftin and Aujanee Baldwin dropped the Pomona lead to only six, giving the Toros some room to breathe. Seeing it fall even closer to five as Baldwin made a lone free throw with 2:51 to go was the closest the Toros would see in the first as they entered the break, down 31-21.

The Broncos came out charging in the second, quickly building up to a 16-point lead at 41-25 with 11:44 left in play. Feeling the pressure, head coach Van Girard called a timeout which spurred the Toros to slowly drop the lead, allowing a six-point streak.

CSUDH got as close as they would in the second as two MacKenzie Mathias trey's dropped the Pomona lead to only four at 49-45.

The final minutes of play was nothing but back-and-forth as eight total fouls and 16 free throws culminated in a final score of 59-51m in favor of Pomona.

Leading the Toros on the night was Mixon who tallied 18 points, 7 boards and 3 blocks. Both Baldwin and Mathias came in with an additional 9 points apiece while Barbara Houston was second in boards with 6.

Now with a record of 12-7, (7-5 CCAA), the Toros remain squarely in the number four spot in the CCAA. They will play host duties this following week as they see action against Cal State L.A. on Thursday, February 4th and UC San Diego the following night. Both games are set to tip-off at 5:30pm.
