Visiting Lumberjacks Axe Toros, 72-56, in Snapping Win Streak at Four

Carson, CA -- Falling victim to Humboldt State's first-half surge, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team started its own second-half surge that proved too little too late as they fell for the first time five games in a 72-56 loss to the visiting 'Jacks . Responsible for nearly half of CSUDH's score was Neka Mixon with 25 points and 10 rebounds on the night.

Though holding the game close with a one-point lead at 15-14, it was a game-breaking layup from HSU's Brittney Taylor at 11:41 in the first half that created the first-half surge that would propel Humboldt to victory.

What followed was a 20-point 'Jack streak that gave them a hefty lead at 36-15. A Mixon trey with only 2:42 left in the first snapped the streak to give the Toros some breathing room, but HSU increased its lead to 25 at 43-18 as the game entered the break.

The second half resulted in much-better shooting from the Toros as they rallied behind Mixon and Brittney Blankenship to quickly bring the deficit to 11 at 55-43. A MacKenzie Mathias free throw gave some hope to CSUDH as they resolved to keep the game close the remainder of the half.

The Toros would see their biggest point streak in the last half of the second as a charity line shot from Blankenship and two from Aujanee Baldwin brought them to only 10-below at 62-52.

Humboldt refused to let CSUDH take any ground, however, as they secured to win at 72-56, grabbing the second place spot in the CCAA.

With the loss the Toros move to third in conference standings with a CCAA record of 5-4 (10-6 overall).

Leading the night was Mixon with her third season double-double and highest point output to date with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Blankenship also scored in double figures with 11 points and eight boards.

CSUDH will continue its hosting duties as they face off against Sonoma State tomorrow at 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
