Toros Hand Chico State Third CCAA Loss in 63-55 Win

Chico, CA -- Controlling the action nearly the entire game and out-shooting their opponents 46.8% to 34%, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team grabbed its fourth win in the CCAA as they defeated Chico State on the road 63-55. The offensive prowess in the game came from Neka Mixon, who tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Rallying the Toros only 0:15 into the game, Mixon landed a layup to put two on the board first for CSUDH and set a tempo that would last the rest of the half. Despite her efforts, the Wildcats quickly rebounded to grab a minor lead until a feed from Kayla Montalvo to Teriana Loftin at 5:31 would change the half in the Toros favor with the lead at 20-19.

Loftin would then go on to make one of her two free throws after a Wildcat foul, and sink an ensuing jumper to bring the Toro lead to four. Another Mixon layup increased the lead to eight at 27-19, the biggest CSUDH would see that half.

Keeping the game close, a timely layup from Chico's Renee Goldoff, who scored six points on the night, would drop the Toros to only a one-point lead at 29-28 as they entered the break.

After bringing their lead up to ten off Whitney Gantt's two free throws, CSUDH hit a small bump on the way to a win, dropping their lead down to three at 45-42 with 10:36 left in the game.

An immediate trey shot from Montalvo, who took assistance from Brittney Blankenship, again started the Toro offense that was so oppressive in the first half to quickly run up a 10-point lead at 52-42.

Keeping the Wildcats scoreless for many minutes at a time proved too costly for Chico as a nine-point Toro streak, capped with two made free throws from Kayla Huckabee, secured the win as CSUDH saw its biggest lead at 63-46 with 1:59 left to play.

Enduring a late Wildcat push in the final minute of play, the Toros knotted the win at 63-55 with their final points coming off Huckabee's final shots from the charity line.

The ability to hold onto the ball and make the shots they needed secured the Toro win as they out-shot the Wildcats 46.8% to 34%. Also attributing to the win was the Toros 20 points off turnovers, opposed to Chico's 14.

With 14 points and 10 rebounds, Mixon grabbed an easy double-double to lead the offensive pressure of the Toros. With 10 points and four rebounds, Aujanee Baldwin provided the necessary offensive push when needed. A clincher in the win was Blankenship, who grabbed five of the Toros' 10 steals in the game.

Now at 9-5 (4-3 CCAA), the Toros are sitting in the fourth spot in the CCAA, the highest they have been all season. CSUDH will now travel to Cal State Stanislaus for tomorrow's action with tip-off set at 5:30 pm.
