Volleyball Splits Day Two of Triton Invitational, Grabs First Season Win

Rebekah Wolfgramm gave an outstanding 24 assists to help the Toros to their first win of the season against NDNU

La Jolla, CA --- The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team defeated the Argonauts of Notre Dame de Namur 3-2 for its first win of the season at the Triton Invitational. Coming down to the wire in set five, the Toros were led by Madison Horsley who posted an impressive 10 kills and 19 digs, and Marissa Anderson with 12 kills.

Going 25-18, 22-25, 26-24, 21-25 and 15-12, the match was the longest and toughest of the season, yet with not a single moment of downtime. As the game led into set four it was clear that with the Toros' determination, a win was to be had.

"I am happy that the girls pulled out a tough win in five", said head coach Scott Davenport. "I am looking to a few more this weekend, and a number of more wins in this season."

The Toros were led offensively by Anderson and Horsley with respective 12 and 10 kills. Horsley also captured a double-double with an additional 19 digs with Rebekah Wolfgramm (pictured) also contributing 24 assists, her highest total of the season.

Play continues today as the Toros (1-5) will now face Seattle Pacific University at 4:00 pm.

La Jolla, CA --- In their second game of the day the Toros fell in a tough loss to Seattle Pacific. They were led in offense by Heather Rushton with 5 kills. Wolfgramm once again gave 9 assists while Hilary Hougardy contributed with 17 digs.

Looking to ride the momentum of their first win of the season in the early match, the Toros came out strong with kills and SPU errors to gain an early lead. However, as attack errors plagued their offense the Toros quickly fell behind and dropped the first set.

Set two was a much different story as well-handled balls by Rushton and Horsley gave the Toros a chance for a set win and a forced set four.  Holding an 18-17 lead at one point was the best news of the game, but more errors forced the Toros to chase from behind, a task that proved too daunting in SPU's 25-22 set two win.

Noticeably weary from game one's five-setter, the Toros couldn't muster the energy of their early morning victory and succumbed to the Falcon attack.  Wolfgramm proved her setting prowess as she helped Marissa Anderson to achieve the closest score of the set at 13-13, but a fresh SPU squad closed out the Toros in the final set, taking a 25-16 decision.

The Toros were led in offense by Rushton with 5 kills.  Wolfgramm once again gave 9 assists while Hilary Hougardy contributed with 17 digs.

The Triton Invitational will close out tomorrow as the Toros (1-6) face Lynn University (Florida), with first serve set for 11:00 am
 in La Jolla.
