Toros Momentum Squelched Twice at Home in Season Openers

Marissa Anderson led the Toros with 13 kills in the game

Carson, CA --- Playing an energetic four sets, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team lost its season opener 1-3 against the Urban Knights of Academy of Art in San Francisco, a school in its first ever year of athletics.  Nearly pulling a win in the fourth set could have given them game-winning momentum, but AAU pulled ahead to claim the 26-24 set, and take the match in four.

Leading a new squad with only four returners, the Toros gained the lead late in set one with the offensive help of Marissa Anderson who recorded three-consecutive late game service aces to propel the Toros to a 25-21 win.

AAU responsded early in set two, taking a lead off the service of KaUwila Lavea, gaining them a 12-6 lead. The Toros would eventually record 15 points, but not enough to answer the Knight's 25.

Set three continued evenly as the Toros started to show signs of winning off the setting of Rebekah Wolfgramm to Ashley Clark and Anderson. Down 17-20, CSUDH called a time-out in an attempt to gain the lead but was not able to follow through as two errors ended up costing them the set.

Reeling from a 6-12 deficit in set four, CSUDH seemed to make its way back after a clean kill from Madison Horsley put them back in the set.  With five points in a row courtesy of Heather Rushton, Anderson and errors on the Knight's part, the Toros looked to make a late game comeback.  But AAU eventually broke down the Toros offense, forcing them to commit three attack errors for a final score of 26-24 in winning the match, 3-1.

Anderson led CSUDH with 13 kills while libero Melissa Velasco chipped in 8 digs in the loss.  The Urban Knights were paced by KaUwila Lavea's match-high 15 putaways, with Jelena Jakovjevic adding 10 in UAA's win.

The Toros (0-1) will continue play shortly against Central Washington University (1-0).  AAU (1-1) will now go on to face Grand Canyon University at Cal State L.A. as tournament play continues.

Carson, CA --- The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team fell 0-3 tonight to the Central Washington University Wildcats, a team predicted to place third in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Toros (0-2) relied on the offensive prowess of Tamesha Jefferson (12 kills) to carry them through the sets, however the effort was not enough for the night.

Set one may have set the pace for the rest of the match as the Toros fell behind early, 4-10. After a timeout, the Toros seemed poised to make a comeback as two kills by Marissa Anderson and two attack errors on the side of the Wildcats brought the deficit up to only 8-10. However kills from Kady Try and Erin Norris of CWU helped push the Wildcats to a set one win with a final score of 25-21.

Thanks to a well-placed kill care of Ashley Clark, the Toros took their first lead of the game in the second set at 8-7. Subsequent kills from Jefferson and Heather Rushton quickly propelled the Toros to a 15-11 lead, their largest of the game. The Wildcats, however, coming off their own timeout, turned the tide of the game - for a brief lead of 23-17 - off the hands of Rachael Schurman. The Toros responded and quickly caught up to 24-24 but the 'Cats pulled out a kill apiece from Morgan Zamora and Schurman to win the set 26-24.

Ashley Clark helped give CSUDH momentum with her serving at the start of the third set to quickly give the Toros a brief 2-0 lead. The Wildcats took their biggest lead of the set with a score of 17-7 and played on to an eventual score of 25-11 to silence the Toros in three.

Jefferson led CSUDH in kills with 12 while Clark contributed 9. Cassidy Mangum recorded 14 digs, one more than Rebekah Wolfgramm. For CWU, Shcurman led with 11 kills while Kady Try posted 11 digs.

The Toros (0-2) will continue play in the Inaugural CSUDH/CSULA Tournament tomorrow night as they face Grand Canyon University (0-2), with first serve set for 7:00 pm in the Torodome.
