Patience Pays Off as Cougars Rout Toros 14-4 in Non-Conference Play

Box Score
Carson, CA - Averaging nearly 8.2 runs per game coming into today's non-conference contests, the NAIA Cougars of Cal State San Marcos showed discipline at the plate, drawing seven walks and seeing nine 3-2 counts on the day to end the Toros' five-game winning streak in grand fashion with a convincing 14-4 win.  With the loss CSUDH falls to 17-15 and CSUSM extends its win streak to seven games and improves to 17-14-1.

The Cougars struck first in the top of the 2nd after back-to-back singles by Tristan Gale and Terry Mortiz as, after a wild pitch advanced them to second and third with one out, Dane Ponciano grounded out to the first baseman allowing Gale to score.

The Toros got things going in the bottom of the 3rd when the CCAA leader in home runs Cody Puckett surprised the defense by dropping a bunt down the third base line on the first pitch, and Jon Alia crushed a 1-0 pitch to center for his 10th jack of the season, putting CSUDH out in front 2-1.

That slim lead would not last long as CSUSM's Ponciano launched a 3-2 offering over the wall in right for a three-run homerun, and after a two RBI double by Louie Russo and RBI swings from Austin Way and Gale, Mortiz capped off the nine-run inning with a two-run shot to left center.

Ryan Ayers brought home the third run of the game for the Toros in the bottom of the 6th with an RBI ground out after Kevin Pillar led off the inning with a double down the left field line, but CSUSM countered with a pair in its next at bat.

Alia drove in his third run of the game in the bottom of the 7th with a single through the left side to bring home Daniel Hartman, who led off the inning with a single to right and stole second.

The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the top of 9th for their 13th and 14th runs of the afternoon.

On the mound CSUSM starter Jared Suwyn tossed 6.0 innings for his second win of the season, allowing three runs on eight hits and tossing 93 pitches, of which 55 found the strike zone.

Alia and Pillar each had three hits on the day for the Toros, while Chris Hunter chipped in a pair of singles.

CSUDH gets back to conference play this Friday, April 11, when they host Cal State Stanislaus for a four-game set, with first pitch of the series set for 2:00 pm, with Sunday's final game of the series marking the last home conference game, which will see the Toros honor six seniors in a pregame ceremony.
