Matt Phillips Dominates as CSUDH Rallies for 8-7 Win Over SFSU to Sweep Four-Game Series

Box Score
Carson, CA - After outscoring visiting San Francisco State 33 to 15 over the first three games of the series, it came down to a wild pitch in the 8th that allowed the Toros' go-ahead run to touch home, capping a six-run come-from-behind victory as sophomore submarine southpaw Matt Phillips dominated the Gator bats out of the pen for his fourth win of the season.  With the win CSUDH improves to 17-24, 13-11 CCAA, while SFSU falls to 7-29-1, 1-19 CCAA.

With two outs in the top of the 3rd, SFSU grabbed its first lead of the series when lead-off man Bobby Carini crushed an 0-1 offering deep to left field for a solo shot, and after a single, Gator catcher Matt Kavanaugh one-upped his teammate with a two-run jack to right to give SFSU a 3-0 lead.

The Toros got back one of the runs when Daniel Hartman, taking a lengthy lead after getting on with a one out single, induced a pick-off attempt by the Gator catcher, only to see his attempt sail high which enabled Hartman to get on his horse and come all the way around to score.

In the 6th Kavanaugh led off with a walk after breaking his aluminum bat on a foul ball, and Matt Edgecombe and Conor Buestad hit back-to-back doubles for two more runs, after which Ernie Munoz followed with a RBI single to extend the Gator lead that grew to 7-1 on a bases loaded walk.

CSUDH picked up its bats in the bottom of the 6th focused on a comeback, pushing across four runs on six hits to cut the deficit to just two at 7-5.

The Toro comeback was complete when a Carlos Leyva bases-loaded single to right that should have  scored just one run was overrun by the outfielder, allowing another run to score and knot the game at 7-7.  CSUDH looked primed to score more, but after a fielder's choice caught a Toro baserunner in a pickle, a failed suicide squeeze quickly pulled runners off the basepaths.

Despite the baserunning problems, CSUDH thought it had the go-ahead run touch home plate when a balk was called with two outs and a runner at third, but the umpiring crew reversed the call and Gator reliever Oscar Campos retired the final out of the frame on a fly ball to right.

CSUDH's come-from-behind victory was complete in the next inning however, when defensive substitution Ryan Ayers led off the 8th by being struck by a pitch and was sacrificed over to second by Candelario Flores.

Hartman then hit a ground ball to short which the shortstop easily collected and looked Ayers back towards second, but Ayers reversed his direction right as the shortstop delivered the ball to first and flew safely into third.

Ayers again used his wheels when a wild pitch bounced in front of the catcher and got away, allowing him to score the Toros eighth and final run of the day.

Phillips was nearly unhittable out of the pen for the Toros, tossing 3.1 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out five of the last six batters to pick up the win.

At the plate four Toros picked up two hits while Flores drove in two runs.

CSUDH takes a break from conference play on Tuesday, April 8, when they host NAIA Cal State San Marcos at 3:00 pm on Toro Field.
