Toros Sweep Twinbill From Gators With Strong Starting Pitching in Opener Before Power Display in Nightcap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Game 1    Game 2

Carson, CA - The Toros took both games of a twinbill against San Francisco State behind a four-hit starting performance by Phillip Van Doren in the opener before blasting three homeruns in the nightcap for the 6-4 and 15-6 wins. With the victories CSUDH improves to 16-24, 12-11 CCAA and SFSU falls to 7-18-1, 1-18 CCAA.

Candelario Flores led off the opener for the Toros with a double to right center, and was followed by a sac bunt and an RBI single up the middle by Eric Blackwell to get CSUDH out in front for the second day in a row.

Both teams' bats would go quiet over the next five innings, as neither teams was able to push across any runs.

In the seventh Carlos Leyva dropped down a bunt single and advanced to second on another Toros sac bunt.  Martin Conde then stepped in the box and laid down a hard bunt past the pitcher that forced the second baseman to charge to no avail, as Leyva put it in high gear from second on contact and scored.

CSUDH tacked on one more run in the seventh before adding three more in the eighth to take a 6-0 lead going into the ninth.

SFSU put everything it had into its last at bat as an error and three-straight walks broke up the shutout with Ernie Munoz lacing a double down the left field line to clear the bases and bring the tying run to the plate with one out.

Reliever Danny Torres got the next Gator to fly out to right, but the next Gator Josh Oliver drew a full count walk to put the go-ahead run on base.  However, Torres induced a line drive to short to end the game and halt the comeback attempt.

Van Doren tossed one of the best games this season for CSUDH, being perfect through four innings before allowing his first baserunner in the fifth and eventually finishing the game with no runs allowed and just four hits on 102 pitches while striking out six against no walks.

At the plate Gomez and Leyva were each 3-for-4 with the latter also swiping two bases.  Conde picked up two hits and drove in two while Blackwell and Flores each had two hits and an RBI.

In game two CSUDH wasted little time putting away the Gators, sending 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first to score seven runs.

In the second the Toros put up five more runs with a leadoff bomb by Jon Alia, an RBI single by Eduardo Gomez, and a three-run jack by Flores down the right field line.

With a pair of runners on in the bottom of the fourth the CCAA leader in long balls Cody Puckett launched his 13th shot of season to extend the lead to 15-1.

However, just as in each of the pervious two games the Gators had no quit in them, scoring a pair in the fifth, one on a homerun by Ernie Munoz in the sixth, and then two more in the seventh.

Matt Hopps picked up his second win of the season, tossing 88 pitches over 5.1 innings with four strikeous.

Offensively Conde went 3-for-3 while Puckett and Flores each drove in three runs.

The two teams conclude the four-game set tomorrow, Sunday, April 6, with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 am on Toro Field.
