Warriors Sweep Season Series in 6-4 and 3-1 Wins Over No. 24 Toros

Senior Mayra Oliden and her parents on "Senior Day"

Carson, CA -- Visiting Cal State Stanislaus completed its regular season series sweep with 6-4 and 3-1 wins over the Toros this morning, dropping CSUDH to 21-20 and 10-12 in the CCAA and spoiling “Senior Day” ceremonies.  The Warriors, meanwhile, moved to 23-17, 16-8 CCAA with the wins, and have won 18 of their last 22 after starting the season 5-13.

The Toros put together single runs in their first two trips to the plate in the opener, courtesy of a Jennifer Frazier sacrifice fly and a Katie Garcia RBI single one inning later.  CS Stanislaus, however, riding momentum from yesterday's three home runs, tied the game in the 3rd as Meghan Franksen deposited the first pitch she saw from CSUDH starter Regina Farfan into the grass beyond the center field fence for a 2-2 tie, her 5th blast of the year.

The Warriors nearly took the lead one inning later, but Jessica Scholl's towering shot to left hit the top of the fence, resulting in a two-out double.  After a single by Alicia Reid and a passed ball put runners on 2nd and 3rd, Farfan got out of the jam by freezing Kimiko Wright on a 3-2 heater that caught the inside part of the plate, keeping the game tied.

That tie became a 3-2 Warrior lead in the 5th as Franksen delivered a sacrifice fly to deep left after Sarah Shamblin doubled off Bri Mahr's glove in left, and was moved to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt.  And that lead became a 5-2 advantage in the 6th after Farfan issued a pair of two-out walks, and two throwing errors on the same play one batter later allowed both runners to cross home plate.

Christine Bathauer cut into the lead by blasting the first pitch she saw from CSUS starter Jessica Gaumnitz over the left field fence with one out in the 6th, bringing the Toros to within 5-3, but Warrior Britney Borba matched Bathauer's blast by going yard herself off Toro reliever Kristin Tanaka to lead off the 7th, again giving CSUS a 3-run cushion.

Jodi Nakawatase led off the 7th with a blast over the left field fence, her 4th of the year, but Gaumnitz escaped a two-on jam to run her record to 14-4 in the Warrior win.

The visitors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning of the nightcap, using a dropped throw on a play at the plate and a Casey Stephenson RBI single, and tacked on another run in the 2nd on a Sarah Shamblin RBI single to bring in Kimiko Wright, who singled with two out and stole second to set up Shamblin's heroics.

The Toros got one back as Kaci Carroll singled to lead off the 2nd, and Khryssi Steele brought home pinch-runner Mayra Oliden  from 3B to cut the CSUS lead to 3-1.

CSUDH had a chance in the 4th after two infield singles put runners on 1st and 2nd, but CSUS pitcher Jen Arnold induced an infield fly to shortstop and a comebacker to thwart the Toro rally.

That would be the extent of the scoring despite the Warriors tallying 12 hits as they stranded 7 runners in the game.

Garcia led the Toros with a 3-for-4 afternoon, while Shamblin (4-for-6, 2 R, 1 RBI) and Franksen (3-for-7, 2 R, 3 RBI) paced the way for the Warriors.

Today marked the final regular season home games for seniors Mahr and Mayra Oliden, who were honored in a between-game ceremony.  Four Warrior seniors also were acknowledged in the ceremony.

The Toros take to the road for their final 10 regular season games, still very much in contention for berths in both the CCAA and NCAA Tournaments, with both tournament sites to be determined.
