Toros Split Twinbill with Broncos, Take Opener 11-9 Before Falling in Nightcap 11-6

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Game 1    Game 2

Carson, CA - After the Toro bats pounded out 11 runs in the opener behind three hits from Chris Hunter, Cal Poly Pomona got a solid starting performance in the nightcap and the Toros could never find the big offensive inning to combat the Broncos' hot bats as CSUDH took a 11-9 decision in the opener before falling 11-6 in the late game.  With the split CSUDH falls to 9-16, 6-6 CCAA and CPP improves 5-14, 2-8 CCAA.

Both teams started out quickly, trading a pair of runs in their first at bats before Cal Poly Pomona slipped ahead 4-2 with single runs in the second and third.

Jon Alia laced a single up the middle to bring home Cody Puckett, who reached on a Bronco fielding error to bring CSUDH within one, but the Broncos used a leadoff home run by Joshua Potter in the 5th, a sac fly by Frank Klopp and an RBI double down the left field line by John Daniels in the 6th to extend their lead to 7-3.

After watching the Broncos put up a pair of five run innings yesterday, the Toros came to bat in the bottom of the 6th and proved that they could do the same, and a one out sacrifice fly to center by Alia capped off a five-run inning and gave the Toros their first lead of the day.

CSUDH stretched its lead in the 7th with three more runs, but CPP responded with two of its own in the 8th.

The Broncos would not go down without one final rally as they loaded the bases with two outs, but reliever Matt Phillips struck out the final batter for his first save of the year.

Phillip Van Doren picked up his first win of the year in 5.1 innings of relief.  Chris Hunter led the offense with three hits while Alia drove in three runs and walked twice.  Cody Puckett drew three walks and drove in a run while swiping two bases.

In game two with the Toros up 2-1 after RBI swings by Alia and Candelario Flores in each of the first two innings, the Broncos bats caught fire and recorded three-straight three-run innings to build a 10-2 lead.

The Toros tried to responded with a single run in the 3rd and two more in the 5th to cut the deficit to 10-5.

Each team traded solo runs in the 6th and the Bronco pen held CSUDH scoreless in the 7th.

Hunter was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a walk and Kevin Pillar chipped in three hits while five other Toros collected two hits apiece.

CSUDH is next in action Thursday, March 13, when they kick off a four-game series against UC San Diego on Toro Field at 3:00 pm.
