Toros Give Up a Pair of Five-Run Innings in 11-0 Loss to Cal Poly Pomona

Box Score
Pomona, CA – After four shutout innings by both starting pitchers in game two of the four-game set between Cal State Dominguez Hills and host Cal Poly Pomona, the Broncos used a grand slam as part of a five-run 5th to blow the game open and pick up their first CCAA win of the year in an 11-0 shutout over the Toros.  With the loss CSUDH falls to 8-15, 5-5 CCAA.

Through the first four innings it was a duel between Toro starter Jeff Phillips and Bronco starter Casey Yokubaitis, with Phillips allowing no hits and striking out four and Yokubaitis allowing just two hits and striking out two.

In the bottom of the 5th, however, the Broncos took advantage of a fielding error and a couple of walks to load the bases with one out, and John Daniels stepped into the box and brought everyone home with a grand slam.

The Toro offense never quite seemed to figure out Yokubaitis, who handed the ball over to the pen after seven shutout innings en route to his four-hit and four-strikeout day.

CSUDH tried to get some offense going in the top of the 8th after a leadoff single and stolen base by Carlos Leyva, but after Martin Conde drew a walk, the Bronco pen set the Toros down in order to end the threat.

After tacking on a single run in the 7th, CPP added another five-spot on the board in the 8th to push across its eleventh run of the game.

Offensively Conde was 1-for-2 with a double and walk while Jon Alia had two hits.

Despite being credited with the loss, Phillips was not charged with any of the five runs allowed in the game, scattering four hits while striking out five in five innings on the mound.

The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow, Saturday, March 8, when the series shifts to Toro Field for a twinbill scheduled for a 11:00 am start.
