CS Bakersfield Hands Toros 4-3 and 1-0 Defeats in Non-Conference Action

Game 1    Game 2

Bakersfield, CA -- Former CCAA nemesis and current Division I Cal State Bakersfield swept a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon by 4-3 and 1-0 counts, dropping the Toros to 11-11 overall.  The Roadrunners, meanwhile, improve to 10-9 in its first full year as a Division I institution.

The 'Runners scored single runs in each of the first four innings to take a 4-0 lead in the opening game, while CSUB pitcher Brittany Johnson allowed one hit in each of those innings.  In the 2nd and 4th frames, however, the Toros hit into double plays to quell potential rallies.

The Toros finally broke through with three hits in the 6th inning, gaining their first run of the game on a booming double by catcher Jennifer Tellez.  CSUDH used that momentum one inning later as it loaded the bases with one out, plating its second run on an infield error.  Starter Regina Farfan, who threw a complete game and allowed eight hits in the loss, cut CSUB's lead to 4-3 one batter later after hitting into a fielder's choice, but Johnson got red-hot Jennifer Frazier (pictured), who went 3-for-4 in the opener, to line out to 2nd for the final out.

In the late game Toro starter Kaci Carroll and the 'Runners' Shawna Truan kept the opposing offenses off the scoreboard, dueling into the 6th inning with zeros on the board.  After Truan got out of a 2-runner/1-out jam in CSUDH's half of the 6th, CSUB used three hits to bring across the game's only run as Brooklyn Stuart knocked in Bethany Stuart on a fielder's choice.

Truan took care of the rest by retiring the Toros in order in the 7th, completing the 5-hit masterpiece.  Liz Vazquez tallied two hits for the Toros while Stefanie Frei matched that effort with two hits of her own for the 'Runners.

Carroll allowed just six hits in a brisk game that took just 1 hour and 20 minutes, while the Toros had runners reach base in 12 of the 14 total innings on the day.

The Toros get six days off to prepare for 6th-ranked and defending CCAA Champion Humboldt State's Carson visit on March 14-15, with first pitch on Friday set for 1:00 pm on Toro Diamond.
