Montgomery Tames Broncos in Two-Hit Performance as CSUDH Baseball Wins, 9-3

Box Score
Pomona, CA – Sophomore hurler Bret Montgomery continued his stellar pitching, shutting out Cal Poly Pomona over seven innings while allowing just two hits to lead the Toros to a 9-3 win series opening win over the Broncos in game one of their four-game set.

Montgomery was masterful for the Toros after allowing a leadoff single to start the game as the 6-6 righty put the next four batters down in order before giving up a one-out single in second for the second and final hit the Broncos would get off him.

The Thousand Oaks native retired 17-straight batters after allowing that second-inning hit, issuing no walks and striking out four.

Offensively for the Toros, after three-straight singles to load the bases to start the bottom of the second, Jeff Cullen stepped into the box and laced a three RBI single to put the Toros up early.

With CSUDH up 6-0 in the top of the fifth, Cullen's bat struck again with a two RBI single and Jon Alia launched a solo shot in the seventh to cap off the scoring.

The Broncos picked up their bats in the bottom of the eighth looking at a nine-run hole, but took advantage of the Toro pen as CPP smacked four hits and scored three runs over the last two innings of play.

Cullen led the offense with five runs batted in on just two hits, while Alia chipped in three hits and two RBIs.

The two teams do battle again tomorrow for game two of the four-game set, with first pitch slated for 2:00 pm on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona.
