Puckett's Two-Run Walk-Off Lifts Toros to 10-Inning Win Over Golden Eagles, 9-7

Box Score
Carson, CA - It had been nearly a year since junior shortstop Cody Puckett ended a ball game as he did with a two-run walk off bomb at Toro Field against Cal State San Bernardino, but after a late offensive flurry by Cal State L.A. knotted the game at 7-7 in the 9th, Puckett stepped into the batter's box with one on and one out in the 10th and launched his ninth homerun of the season to help CSUDH take game two of the series against their cross-town rival, 9-7.  With the win CSUDH moved back ahead of CSULA for fifth place in the CCAA with a record of 12-19, 9-9 CCAA.

It looked like it would be an offensive showcase for CSULA in the early going as CSULA scored two runs in the top of the 1st on RBI swings from Tyler Warmerdam and Henry Contreras, but starter Phillip Van Doren, making his first start of the season, locked in and allowed just two hits over the next 5 1/3 innings.

Down a pair in the bottom of the 2nd, Martin Conde hit a bullet off the left field fence that allowed Kevin Pillar to score from second and Carlos Leyva all the way from first to tie the game at two, and Candelario Flores put CSUDH ahead with an RBI single to center to close the scoring in the frame.

The Toros padded their lead with solo shot by Jon Alia in the 5th and tacked on another on a CSULA fielding error in the 6th before pushing across two more in the 7th to build a comfortable 7-2 lead.

CSULA took no notice of the deficit and scored five runs over the next two innings, with pinch hitter Kenny Shanahan drawing a full count walk in the 9th with the bases juiced to force home the tying run.

After both teams put runner on base in their next at bats, Daniel Hartman drove an 0-1 pitch through the hole on the left side of the infield with one out to set the stage for Puckett.

Puckett, the CCAA leader in homeruns, walks, and stolen bases then showed why he is one of the most feared bats in the conference by crushing a 3-1 offering to deep center field for his ninth bomb of the season.

Van Doren received the no decision in 7.1 innings of work where he allowed four runs on six hits while striking out four batters and tossing 125 pitches.

In addition to his walk-off shot, Puckett added two other hits while swiping three bases.  Hartman chipped in three hits while Eric Blackwell added a pair of doubles in the win.

The two teams conclude their four-game series tomorrow, Saturday, March 22, on the campus of Cal State L.A. with a twinbill slated for an 11:00 am first pitch.
