Golden Eagles Receive Free Pass Past Toros as CSUDH Baseball Falls to Cal State L.A., 3-2

Box Score
Carson, CA - In a tightly-pitched game by both pitching staffs from start to finish, it came down to a bases loaded walk issued to the visiting Golden Eagles in the top of the 7th that gave Cal State L.A. a one run advantage which proved to be the difference as CSULA took a 3-2 win in the first game of a four-game set.  With the loss CSUDH falls to 11-19, 8-9 CCAA and CSULA improves to 11-15, 6-6 CCAA.

After getting leadoff hits and coming up empty in each of first two innings, the Toros finally broke through in the bottom of the 3rd when Jon Alia stepped into the box and laced a 1-2 pitch to center for a two-RBI single.

However, the Golden Eagles got the offense going in their second time around the order in the top of the 4th.  After the first two batters were sent back to the dugout via strikeout by Toro starter Bret Montgomery, Tyler Warmerdam and Henry Contreras recorded back-to-back hits to place runners at second and third.

A wild pitch allowed Warmerdam to score and Christian Ramirez doubled home Contreras from second, but Ramirez was gunned down at third trying to stretch it to three by a perfect throw from Eric Blackwell in right and a relay by Carlos Leyva at second.

The next two innings saw three hits between the two teams before back-to-back singles by the Golden Eagles to start the top of the 7th put pressure on the Toros.

With runners on first and third and one out, CSULA's Christopher Matzner stole second to take away the double play, and Toro reliever Matt Phillips got the next hitter to strike out for the second out in the inning.

However, after a walk to load the bases, a mid-count pitching change did not turn out well as the Golden Eagle batter walked, allowing the go-ahead run to walk home.

CSUDH threatened in the 8th with a runner on third and two outs, but CSULA reliever Theon Bourdaniotis got the next batter to ground out and closer John Mitchell shut down the Toros in the 9th for his fourth save of the season.

The Golden Eagles got an impressive starting performance from Issac Morales, tossing seven innings and allowing two runs on six hits while throwing 123 pitches, with 89 of them strikes.

Montgomery received the no-decision, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four and no walks, stretching his walk-less streak to 22 consecutive innings.

At the plate Candelario Flores, Blackwell, and Kevin Pillar each went 2-for-4 on the day.

The two teams will do it again tomorrow, Friday, March 21, with first pitch set for 2:00 pm on Toro Field.
