Pitching Reigns Supreme as Toros Earn Split at Chico State

Katie Garcia scored game two's only run in CSUDH's 1-0 win.

Game 1    Game 2

Chico, CA -- Reigning National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Week Kristin Tanaka picked up her first save of the season in spelling Toro starter Regina Farfan in game two as Cal State Dominguez Hills earned a 1-0 win in the nightcap to salvage a split after the host Wildcats took a 3-1 win in game one.

With the victory, CSUDH moves to 16-12, 10-6 CCAA, while CSUC now stands at 13-18, 6-12 CCAA.

Zeros were the story in CSUDH's 1-0 win as Farfan and Wildcat Lauren Walker matched one another pitch for pitch in the early going, registering bagels over the first four innings of play.  In the CSUDH fifth, however, the Toros used three consecutive singles to plate what proved to be the game's only run as Bri Mahr drove in Katie Garcia (pictured) for a 1-0 lead.

That was plenty for Tanaka, who also was named the CCAA Pitcher of the Week, as she allowed just three hits over the final three innings for her first save of the season.

Farfan was dominant as she allowed just two hits in her four innings of work to pick up her eighth win of the year (8-5).

In the opener, the Wildcats pushed across single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings to spot starter Krystal Shaw a 2-0 lead, only to have CSUDH respond in the 4th with a single run after starter Kaci Carroll doubled home Jennifer Frazier, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame.

That was the extent of the Toro offense, however, as Shaw allowed just five hits in the victory.

The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow afternoon at Chico's University Field, with first pitch scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
