Coyotes Snap Losing Streak with 7-1 Win Over Toros

SAN BERNARDINO -- Senior third baseman Drew Valenzuela drove in five runs and senior right-hander Cheyne Hann scattered five hits over seven innings as Cal State San Bernardino snapped a five-game losing streak Friday with a 7-1 CCAA baseball victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
            The victory was the Coyotes' first in CCAA play after four straight conference losses and improved their record to 9-7 overall and 1-4 in the CCAA. The Toros fell to 6-13, 3-3 in the CCAA. The two teams close out their four-game series at 11 a.m. Saturday with a doubleheader at the Toros ballpark in Carson.
            Valenzuela was the hitting star of the day with three hits and one run scored in addition to his RBI count. He also had three assists and a putout at third. Hann struck out seven and walked only one in his stint to improve to 2-2 on the season. Michael Leal pitched two ininngs of scoreless relief in back of Hann, striking out four and allowing just two hits.
            The Toros drew first blood in the top of the first as Jon Alia, a hero of Friday's CSUDH  win over CSUSB, doubled in a run with the third of three hits in the inning, but Hann slammed the door, striking out Jeff Cullen and inducing Eric Blackwell to ground out to third.
            The Coyotes came right back to take a 2-1 lead off Toros starter and loser Matt Hopps (0-3). Mike Minjares led off with a double, was sacrificed to third. Johnnie Haas and Chris LeFay each walked to load the bases and Valenzuela drove in two runs with a double to right center.
            CSUSB made it 5-1 in the fifth on a leadoff double by Haas, a walk to Jason Klug and a walk to LeFay to load the bases. Valenzuela then singled through the hole at shortstop to drive in two runs. Later in the inning, right-fielder Andrew Tapia scored Valenzuea with a sacrifice fly off Toros reliever Phillip Van Doren.
            The Coyotes tacked on two runs in the eighth on a two-out double by Haas, a hit batter, an RBI single up the middle by LeFay and a single to center by Valenzuela that produced the final run.
            Valenzuela raised his RBI count for the season to 12.
           Cody Puckett went two-for-four for the Toros, who managed just seven hits in the game. Minjares and Haas were each two-for-four and shortstop Danny Soles had three hits in the 11-hit Coyotes attack.
