Jodi Nakawase clubbed two home runs and drove in the game-winner in the nightcap
Game 1    Game 2

Carson, CA -- Commemorating today's once-every-four-years event, the Toros took a giant leap away from the twinbill splits they've endured in the early going, using Jodi Nakawatase's two home runs and game-winning game two hit to take 10-1 and 3-2 wins over visiting San Francisco State in this afternoon's CCAA softball doubleheader.

After taking a 2-1 lead on Nakawatase's first home run of the afternoon over the left center field fence in the 3rd inning of the opener, the Toro bats awoke with two in the 4th, and three in both the 5th and 6th innings to put the game away.

Using RBI singles by Bri Mahr and Michelle Medina in the 4th, the Toros used two more RBI singles by Katie Jordan and pinch-hitter Christine Bathauer, which sandwiched an illegal pitch to bring home Liz Vazquez with the inning's second run, for a hefty 7-1 lead.

One inning later, a Nakawatase double and a Jennifer Frazier single with one out preceded Vazquez's trip to the plate, and the junior 3B didn't disappoint as she put an exclamation point on her 2-for-4 day by blasting her first home run of the year to end game one in six innings via the run rule, 10-1.

CSUDH starter Kaci Carroll was splendid in picking up her third win of the year (3-4), scattering 5 hits and fanning 3 while facing just 23 batters on the day.  The true freshman grew stronger as the game progresses, retiring the SFSU side in order in innings 3, 5 and 6 as the Toro offense helped her out with 10 hits in the win.

Game two starter Regina Farfan helped herself at the plate in the 1st by driving home Jordan with a sharp single up the middle for a quick 1-0 lead after Jordan singled and stole second two batters earlier.

The Gators, who fell to 10-10, 2-6 CCAA, answered one at-bat later as Danielle Chapman clubbed a two-out rocket that one-hopped the right field fence to bring home Kelsey Wood and Lea Cardenas, who both singled up the middle to lead off the second.

That's where the score remained until the bottom of the 5th when Nakawatase sent a 3-2 sitter over the center field fence for her second home run of the day to knot the score at 2-2.

The Toros, who improved to 10-10, 4-4 CCAA, had an opening one inning later after a booming one-out double by Jennifer Tellez, but SFSU starter Ashley Jackson was up to the challenge as she induced a weak ground ball for the second out, and fanned the next Toro looking to end the would-be threat.

Three innings later, however, a failed Jessica Marlow sacrifice turned out for the better after she spanked a 1-2 pitch to center field to put two runners on in the bottom of the 9th.  After a walk loaded the bases, Nakawatase remained clutch by slapping a 3-2 pitch up the middle for the game-winner.

Toro reliever Kristin Tanaka picked up her first win of the season by tossing 4.0 innings, allowing just two hits while fanning three, following the lead of Farfan who scattered six hits, allowed two runs and fanned three Gators in a no-decision.

Nakawatase and Mahr led the Toros with four hits apiece, while Nakawatase and Vazquez each tallied 3 RBI.

The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for high noon on Toro Diamond.
