Toros Find Late Offense To Down Coyotes and Take Series Opener, 7-2

Box Score
San Bernardino, CA - After dropping a three-game non-conference set to the Coyotes to open the year, the Toros got a little revenge behind Martin Conde's first long ball of the season, taking down Cal State San Bernardino 7-2 in the series opener.  With the win CSUDH improves to 6-12, 3-2 CCAA while CSUSB falls to 8-7, 0-4 CCAA.
The Toros are now 6-12 on the season and 3-2 in the CCAA while the slumping Coyotes, losers of their last five in a row, slipped to 8-7 overall and 0-4 in the CCAA. The two teams meet again at 2 p.m. Friday at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
Bret Montgomery pitched his third complete game of the season, retiring the last 11 batters in a row and was backed by home runs by senior catcher Conde and junior first baseman Jon Alia. Alia's was a three-run blast in the ninth.
Conde was three-for-five in the game with an RBI and two runs scored while Alia was two-for-three with four RBI in a nine-hit Toros attack. Brent Planck was two-for-three with a run scored for the Coyotes.
Both Montgomery (2-3) and Coyotes starter Matt Long  (2-3) were locked in a pitcher's duel for most of the game. Long went 7.1 innings, striking out five and walking four while yielding seven hits.
Long's wildness in the first inning cost him a run. After Conde singled with one out, Long walked three straight batters, forcing in a run but he got out of a bases loaded jam by striking out Eric Blackwell and getting Chris Hunter to ground out.
The Coyotes got even in the third when Brent Planck singled with one out, was sacrificed to second and scored on Jason Klug's double to left center, giving Klug 26 RBI already on the season.
CSUSB went up 2-1 in the fourth as Drew Valenzuela reach on an infield single, advanced to second on a groundout, then went to third as Danny Soles grounded to second and scored as Alia's errant throw to third went into foul territory.
The Toros tied the game in the seventh on Conde's two-out solo homer to left.
Dominguez Hills took the lead, 3-2,  in the eighth on an error, a sacrifice and a double by Blackwell that brought in Jeff Cullen with what proved to be the winning run and Long was replaced by reliever David McCarthy who got the final two outs.
In the ninth, Candelario Flores singled with one out and stole second. Cody Puckett was intentionally walked and then McCarthy walked Cullen to load the bases. A passed ball allowed Flores to score to make it 4-2 as the runners moved up. Alia then hit his three-run homer to left center.
McCarthy then threw behind the next batter, Blackwell, and was ejected by the home plate umpire. Chad Borowski relieved McCarthy and Blackwell reached on the Coyotes third error of the game, but Hunter struck out swinging to end the inning, with the Toros leadind 7-2.
Montgomery sent the Coyotes packing, retiring the side in order for the third straight inning.
